Owner description: North Carolina's oldest and largest cheese manufacturer. Watch cheese being made in our factory viewing room. Our retail store has all our cheeses available plus our fresh country butter, fresh fudge and hand-dipped ice cream. Something new for the kids (and kids at heart) is our Kandy Korner with over 150 varieties of new and traditional candies. We also have a great selection of NC Wines, and imported cheeses as well as Amish Foods.

We drove to West Jefferson, NC from Blowing Rock to see the factory. When we got there, it was very difficult to actually see the process of making the cheese because the location of the viewing window made it hard to see what was happening in the factory. We spent no more than five minutes there. We did walk across the street to their store where we found lots of good cheese, jams, and wine. Overall, it wasn't worth the drive to see the factory, which was our main destination.

Fun place and some excellent cheese curds for snacking. Gift shop had lots of local products on addition to cheese, so we picked up a bottle of North Carolina Chardonnay. Surprisingly good and excellent with our cheese and crackers later that evening.

We love cheese and this place is probably one of the nicest! Such a great variety and the staff is very helpful and will to offer you any cheese you'd like to taste. Great selection of local, popular wines. They offer the right amount of souvenirs, not too much, not too little! They also offer ice packs and coolers for sale if you'll be on the road for a while. We got there too late for the factory tour across the street, but we will definitely be going back! There are just enough things to do in West Jefferson after a beautiful drive on the Parkway, and this place is a definite place to stop!

We visit the Ashe County Cheese Store anytime we are in the Boone, NC, area (West Jefferson is only about 25 miles outside Boone). The store offers not only several varieties of local cheese made across the street but other cheeses. All the cheeses we have tried have been excellent ... especially their locally produced rounds of cheddar. In addition to cheese, they sell local wines and other gourmet food items. Take a cooler and load up on a variety of their cheeses.

Okay for a one time visit. I was expecting a cool tour of a cheese factory instead I got to look through a little window. I'm not sure how much cheese is made here but they didn't seem to sell much of it in their store. Looking at the labels, it looked like most of the cheese they were selling was from someplace else.
