Owner description: This pioneer farmstead, tucked in the Reems Creek Valley, features the birthplace of Zebulon Baird Vance, Civil War Governor of NC. The five-room log house and its outbuildings are furnished to evoke the period from 1795 to 1840. Vance's military and political career as Civil War officer, North Carolina governor, and U.S. Senator is traced at the homestead. Also included is the history of Vance's famous mountain family.

We had a great tour of Zebulon B Vance's Birthplace. None of us were sure who he was but our tour guide quickly remedied that. Josh was extremely knowledgeable. Vance was a fascinating governor for North Carolina during the difficult years of Secession and the Civil War. He was a moderate in a world of radicals. We enjoyed the tour very much.

“Historical western NC homestead/museum from civil war Era”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2013 via mobile

The museum has interesting artifacts & exhibits from the Vance time period. Great visit especially for history buffs! The house tour is very impressive of what life was like in the 1800's, Josh was our tour guide-he was knowledgable & very informative! If in the area and love history don't miss it...

“Amazing log cabin experience”

Yes, it is still standing! The museum, although small, has many interesting "finds". The tour of the old homestead, the outbuildings, including the slave quarters were quite impressionable. There were a lot of original and period tools and cooking utensils throughout. Would like to see it on a warmer day, since it was extremely cold on our trip.
