“Best Campground Yet”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

I've stayed at many campgrounds and this is by far the best. It's an upscale campground for a cheap price. The staff is very friendly and make the experience personable. I'm really impressed with the cleanliness. First campground I haven't been afraid to shower or use the bathroom. The sites are big, shaded and provide a lot of privacy. The camp store is well stocked with reasonable prices. Will definitely be back, hopefully before the end of this summer! :)

We stayed here 8/16/12-8/19/12. We were very pleased with Ocean Waves. We didn't know what to expect because their rates are so much less than other campgrounds. We got there after the office was closed but they left us clear directions on where to park. We would stay here again. They are a small campground but they do have a pool. The ocean is just over the sand dunes. If you stay anywhere on this island bring bug spray. They would come by with a truck and spray for mosquitos but we were eaten alive.

We found the staff friendly and the facility excellent for our style of camping. We are van campers and they set us up with a site with water and electric. The bath houses were cleaned every morning and were in excellent condition. The camp store was well stocked and the game room was clean and tidy. The pool looked inviting although we did not use it. The grounds are well manicured and nicely laid out. The location was ideal. It is just a short walk to the beach; climb the small dune and there you are! We were in the center of everything we wanted to see with just a 30 to 40 minute drive to Kitty Hawk and Hatteras with nature preserves in between. This will be the place for us on our next visit to OBX.

Stayed here three nights in an RV ... very nice campground, and convenient to exploring the Outer Banks. Clean with fairly spacious sites, and it is also reasonably priced. It's a nice plus to have grass and a few trees around. And the beach is just on the other side of the dune at the edge of the campground.

Several reviewers have mentioned the rules here, but we're glad to have them as they make staying here more comfortable for everyone.

This is a very small, clean and reasonably priced campground catering to large and small RVs as well as some tent camp sites (we have a 35 ft travel trailer and it is tight to maneuver but once it is in, the campsites are very spacious). The RV spots all have concrete slabs, full hook ups 30 and 50 AMP sites, there a multiple bath houses, a small laundry facility, a pool, camp store, paved roads (no dust), and of course the ocean just over the dunes.
This campground feels like a home and most everyone that camps here comes back every year so you can possibly see your camping neighbor again the next year. Because of its size, there are no golf carts (thank goodness) which means no golf cart noise. Because this campground is small and the best price you will find for all they offer, you need to make reservations very early in the year and they work very hard to accommodate your travel times, but everyone wants to camp here so space fills up quick, which doesn't leave room for spontaneity (i.e. if you decide you want to stay 1 or 2 more nights, you may not be able to at this campground...there are other campground within 5 min but are twice the cost).
The ocean is just over the dunes and it is a very short walk to the dunes because the campground is small. Because the dunes are so high, you cannot hear the waves of the ocean until you are up on the dunes. There are no stairs to get over the dunes, just a narrow trail so bring shoes because the sand gets hot! One of the greatest things about this campground is the location in Waves on Hatteras Island and the national sea shore. This beach is very dog friendly (on a leash of course) but dogs can go anywhere on the beach you can go and it is not overly crowded here either.
You cannot beat Ocean Waves Camp Ground it is the place to stay while visiting the OBX!

This is a very nice family owned campground close to the beach. It is clean and the sites all have concrete pads and picnic tables. The staff in the office are friendly and very helpful. We agreed to stay two nights with the option of staying for night # 3. The lady at the office said all we needed to do was pay for the third night when we checked out. Rather than wait until we checked out on the third day we stopped by the office before our day trip up the coast to pay in advance. We were then told that we could indeed stay the third night but we would have to move to another site. Since it takes about 1.5 hours to clear out and re-set up at a new site we decided to forget the day trip and leave. Unfortunately I made the assumption that 3 nights would mean we were staying on the same site, not being asked to move around the campground.

This was the very first campground that I stayed at in the Outer Banks. We stay here every year since about 1999. The facility is very well maintained, including the bathrooms and pool. Waves is one of the best locations in the Outer Banks, smack in the middle and convenient to everywhere. It is also a great town due to abundance of locally owned businesses. Staff is always inviting and willing to help you in any way. They also have the best rates in all of the surrounding area.
