Great little museum right on the water. Inter active and live critters. The staff is very helpful and the exhibits are a great learning experience.

Very professionally done. Excellent information on the "estuary" where the salt and fresh waters meet to form a unique nursery for many fish and animals.

Not great for kids under 7 unless they are great nature lovers.

The Estuarium is a unique museum devoted to giving you an introduction to the diverse life of the estuaries that are so important to the coast of North Carolina. You can visit the exhibits in an hour or less. It was well designed and would appeal to children as well. The building itself and its position on the riverfront -- with a large water filtration catchment basin that cleans up much of the town's street runoff before discharging it into the river -- is also impressive.

Head out from the NC Estuarium on their 12 passenger pontoon boat for a delightful 1.5 hr.ride on the Pamlico/Tar River. This river tour alone was worth our visit!

You depart from a pleasant, modern waterfront with brick walkway, benches and lights. The captain provides friendly down-home commentary on local history, economic development in the area, and best of all, local wildlife and natural environment. We saw a bald eagle, kingfisher, turtles, jumping fish, 200-year old bald cypress, and picturesque Spanish moss. We passed several charter boats docked along the river, and we saw a few kayakers paddling the flatwater.

There's a $4 adult admission to the Estuarium, but the narrated boat tour, available from April thru October, is free, reservations required. It may be the best travel bargain around! Please consider a donation to the River Rover in the donation box provided.

Travel tip, Bring a drink container or buy bottled water/drinks in town before heading to the Estuarium as these were not available on our arrival. Otherwise, there is a very nice gift shop (I could fill my Christmas list from this store), clean restrooms, and a water fountain. The soda machine is unreliable.

We're planning a return trip as our schedule didn't allow us to tour the inside exhibits this time. P.S. Sunsets along the riverfront are spectacular.

The Estuarium is very informative! Very friendly staff, clean and well kept. If your in town you need to stop by and check this place out. They also have a free boat ride that takes you right out on the river, only certain Saturday, but you have to reserve ahead.
