Love the Mediterranean food here. Try the Sampler dinner with a group of friends. So much good food and you get to try a variety of flavors.

Three friends and I tried Zaitona for lunch today, as we have been hearing lots of good things about it since it opened recently. They have an extensive menu with a lot of great-looking choices (soups, salads, sandwiches, appetizers and lots of "small plate" options).

The lunch option we chose included 4 choices from the small, tidy-looking and very fresh buffet. (I am normally VERY anti-buffet, but everything sounded great so I had a hard time just choosing one thing!) We shared bites and everything I tasted was very good. Some of the selections are: stuffed grape leaves, a super fresh, falafel, lemony tabbouleh with lots of chopped fresh parsley, stuffed cabbage leaves, stuffed collard leaves, kefteh, hummus, moussaka, a middle-eastern chicken salad that was out of this world, grilled vegetables, and lamb, beef or chicken kebab (these are grilled to order while you wait, as opposed to the other hot foods from the buffet which are served to you after you choose your preferences). The menu has these choices plus many other things, but the items we tried were all part of the $7.95 (!) special.

The main thing that really jumps out is the freshness and authenticity of the dishes. I'm a Greek-American from a family of great cooks, so I grew up eating a lot of middle-eastern/Greek/Turkish foods and it's obvious the owners know what they're doing, and the flavors are very fresh and appealing. Not one thing appeared to be pre-made, and like they should be, nearly all of the dishes are fairly light and healthy with lots of veggies, herbs and spices, and not a lot of fat or unhealthy starch.

The other big positive about Zaitona is the service -- not just friendly and prompt (which it was) but very informed and helpful. The owners are Lebanese, and the food choices reflect that more than true Greek cuisine, but the similarities are many. The servers explained in detail what all of the foods on the buffet were, and the owner himself came by our table twice to check on us, and although it was a Tuesday in January, the placed was quite busy.

The atmosphere is comfy and casual, painted brick wallsm high ceilings, hardwood floors, a nice bar area and outside seating with a fabulous view of the waterfront.

Our total check for four (soft drinks only, although they do have a full bar which I would definitely take advantage of for an evening meal) was under $40, including tax.

Zaitona is a much-welcomed fresh ethnic-food option in Washington! Would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys authentic middle-eastern flavors and fresh-made, healthy choices.

Our first visit to this restaurant, and first experience with Jerusalem style food. Our group of five took the waitress's advice and ordered the "sampler". In essence, this was a platter of each item on the menu, enough for a copious serving for each of the five of us. There must have been more than 10 platters, and enough food for 8. Such a variety of unique favors, all delicious. They have a full bar, but no wine list (yet) but did have a Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay, all of which were drinkable if not memorable. Interesting that the cab was $8 per glass, and the Pinot Grigio $4 per glass. Brick walls, hard wood floors, bright lights and bare tables resulted in a somewhat harsh atmosphere, but the staff was so friendly, they made up for it. If you're in the mood for a culinary diversion away from traditional Eastern North Carolina fare, give Zaitona a try - I think you'll be glad you did.

Went to Zaitona AGAIN last week with several family members visiting from Minnesota who had not eaten Mediteranean food before. I asked Asef, the owner, to serve us a family-style variety of his choosing. They LOVED it all. Even my niece's 14 year old son loved it! And, I now have a new favorite. The lamb shish kabobs are absolutely exceptional! Asef said he has 5 marinates he uses for lamb shish kabobs. I will eventaully try them all, even though the others can't possibly be any better than the one he used on ours that night! Shanna, our waitress, was delightful too and made sure we were well taken care of. Delicious, fresh, interesting and HEALTHY food...and excellent service....and a full service bar....and lots of convenient parking....and in the best location on the waterfront in Little Washington! Oh, and very reasonably priced too! You can't beat it! I'm planning to go back tonight. Can't wait for warm weather to enjoy outside dining and the specular waterfront views! Washington is a charming little historical, waterfront town with a warm, embracing ambience. It's a great place to shop, dine and play....particularly in the spring, summer and fall. Give Zaitona and Washington a try. Check out the Inner Banks Artisan Center (http://www.innerbanksart…) at 158 W. Main Street while you're there! Outstanding selection of many mediums of art....and music too!
