We recently relocated to coastal North Carolina, and prior to moving spent the summer visiting the Inner Banks. That's when we discovered Backwater Jack's. The atmosphere is lively and fun, they have live music on weekends, and it's always bustling with locals and visitors alike. The menu is Caribbean Islands-meets burger joint, and they have fantastic fresh local seafood (oysters, shrimp, seasonal local fish). They offer healthy vegetarian options too, and the food, while casual, is well-seasoned and freshly made.

What really makes BJX a must-visit is the atmosphere. It's like a mini vacation. The staff and owners are super-friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant is on two open-air levels, with an outdoor bar, all looking out on the Pamlico River. They have an interesting selection of local micro-brews as well as classic great beers like Stella, on tap.

We have been to BJX at least 20 times since July, with or without our teenage kids, and it never misses. Great place for lunch, dinner, or just a draft micro-brew on the deck on a hot summer evening.

We had lunch here after visiting Inner Banks kayak shop next door. The food was just what we were looking for -- good, casual comfort food. We both had the fried oysters which tasted fresh and were not overly breaded. My wife ordered the sweet potato fries as her side and they were crisp with a soft center -- just right! I had the black beans and rice with pico de gallo and it was tasty. They had a nice selection of beers, many on draft. Service was prompt and friendly. All in all, a place we will be going back to for sure.

Have eaten in several restaurants in this waterfront town on the Pamlico and was invited by friends who took me there recently. Yep...nice surprise. Nothing pretentious but loaded with character, this two level restaurant has multiple seating and menu options. Located along railroad tracks, there is outdoor seating on each level and cozy indoor options to boot. Tried the oysters and shrimp as well as the crab dip. All were very good. Oysters were as good or better than any others I have tried in the town while visiting. Good micro brew selection. I will definitely be back.

This was my first time to eat here. The restaurant is indoors with an outdoor. Casual describes both the decor and the atmosphere. It is across the street from the waterfront but the view is limited. The menu lists quite a few items including appetizers, sandwiches, salads, burgers and seafood items. We tried the mahi mahi Caesar salad which was a good sized fresh salad with Caesar dressing topped with a large grilled mahi mahi filet. We also tried the fried oysters with a side of cole slaw and sweet potato fries. The oysters were very lightly breaded and not overcooked. Both entrees were very good. The beer selection is extensive with a number of local micro-brews. The food and drinks were not overpriced. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. A satisfying dinner overall.....I almost forgot, they don't accept credit cards. There is an ATM available.
