Seafood restaurants that actually serve freshly caught regional seafood are increasingly rare and are particularly difficult to find in the Research Triangle area in North Carolina. Backfins is a gem in an unexpected location in downtown Wake Forest. The owners use their Chesapeake bay connections to offer freshly caught atlantic blue crab, something that has become hard to find inland and even at the NC coast. This is old school, crack off the shell and pick the meat over brown paper crab eating. Although more expensive the "jumbos" and "large" crabs are more rewarding for the effort involved. Availability depends upon the catch. Deliveries come in on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. You can call in ahead to see what's available and reserve some in the size of your choice. If large or jumbo are not available other sizes are still delicious and the crab cakes and fried oysters are a tasty consolation. Picking and eating atlantic blue crab is heavenly but not "uptown" and appropriately this is not a fancy dinning experience. It's just really delicious and all too rare these days.

A couple friends and I went to this restaurant on a Friday evening. We were seated right away, although the restaurant was very busy with a lot of customers. Our waitress was so friendly! She brought us two different soups to sample and we didn't even ask about nor order any soup for our dinner. I had the crab cake sandwich. It was the best crab cake I have ever eaten! One of my friends ordered the crab cake platter. The crab cakes were so big she couldn't eat both, so she took one home along with some left over french fries. Needless to say, the portions are very generous and you won't leave this restaurant hungry!

On the way home from Florida we stopped in and had a wonderful experience, we have gone back 2 or 3 times since and it only gets better. So far we have not ordered a complete meal, we take turns ordering appetisers 4 or 5 of them will do you in especially the cream crab soup.

This was our second visit. The first was shortly after they opened a few years ago and since we weren't big on blue crabs and their menu was at the time pretty limited we were not sure we would be back. So I purchased a Groupon to give it a second try. So glad we did! Their menu has expanded which was a blessing for those of us still not fans of blue crabs. Our table included chargrilled oysters which were to die for, snow crab legs, cooked perfectly, fried scallops and shrimp which were delicious. You are not going home hungry but instead most likely with take home containers. Its' down home, nothing fancy, the kind of place that should be sitting on the waterfront with ocean breezes and the sound of seagulls. Our server was awesome, on the ball and the people working the bar were friendly and hospitable. The only thing I wish would be that they have an outdoor patio. The two table they have out front on the sidewalk doesn't work. It's the kind of place that needs picnic tables set up outside. Another diamond in a place you might walk by....don't....step through those doors, yell hello and order a meal to remember. Oh, and for those of you who are all about those blue crabs...they looked like fun, lots of hammering going on and happy faces enjoying!
