Seafood restaurants that actually serve freshly caught regional seafood are increasingly rare and are particularly difficult to find in the Research Triangle area in North Carolina. Backfins is a gem in an unexpected location in downtown Wake Forest. The owners use their Chesapeake bay connections to offer freshly caught atlantic blue crab, something that has become hard to find inland and even at the NC coast. This is old school, crack off the shell and pick the meat over brown paper crab eating. Although more expensive the "jumbos" and "large" crabs are more rewarding for the effort involved. Availability depends upon the catch. Deliveries come in on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. You can call in ahead to see what's available and reserve some in the size of your choice. If large or jumbo are not available other sizes are still delicious and the crab cakes and fried oysters are a tasty consolation. Picking and eating atlantic blue crab is heavenly but not "uptown" and appropriately this is not a fancy dinning experience. It's just really delicious and all too rare these days.
