We had the best time at this casual restaurant. They stop serving at 7 and that was a bit of a bummer but the food was really good. We enjoyed the roasted okra appetizer as well as the pimento cheese -- both excellent. Our large table had an array of menu items and all were very nice. Our server was Will and he was prompt and helpful. The food was a great value and was very tasty.

I had lunch here with a friend this weekend and everything was perfect. Service was attentive. Menu was accommodating while not being too big. The atmosphere was incredible. A beautifully restored house in historic Valle Crucis, sitting on a hill overlooking the valley below.

I started with the Pork Fat Fries. I couldn't stop eating them.

We both had the BLT with a cup of the gumbo. Both items were perfectly prepared with fresh ingredients and presented well.

All together, the entire experience was worth writing about and both of us will return.

Very nice atmosphere, Casual dress and children are welcome there. All foods are grown locally. We visited there for lunch and had a burger. Very moist and delicious. They also have a pimento cheese appetizer you will want to try. Beer and wine is also available. Very nice rounded menu. The restaurant is in an old house with a wrap around porch. We opted to sit out here and enjoyed the cool mountain breeze.

My wife and I loved the restaurant that was previously here, The 1841 Farmhouse, so we were hoping the Over Yonder would be as good. I’m disappointed to say that this is not the case.

We went for lunch. First the good; our waitress was excellent. She was prompt, courteous and in everyway provided good service. Next the not so good; the menu was extremely limited and lacked imagination and effort. For lunch, we had a choice of cheeseburger, grits with several different toppings, or salads. We ordered a cheese and ham plate for appetizer, but were informed that it was not longer available as they were changing the menu to drop non-selling items. The waitress said she could get the chef to prepare an appetizer of pimento cheese, ham, and toast which we tried. It was okay, but clearly was just a quick substitution as it showed no effort at content or presentation. We also ordered a bottle of wine from the menu that included only four or five reds The waitress told us that our selection was not available, but did come back to tell us that she had found one last bottle. Not wanting a cheeseburger or to order from the also limited dinner menu, we ordered from the appetizers. My wife ordered a dinner sized salad which she said was good. I order a dinner sized bowl of gumbo. The gumbo was also good, but was probably less than a true cup in size, did not include bread and cost eleven dollars. I also had desert, banana pudding, which was very good. Three appetizers, bottle of wine, and desert cost $78. Finally the very bad; the grounds are in bad repair. We sat outside in their gazebo. There were dead plants and shrubs around it that some what blocked the view of the hillside and their garden which was also neglected. As we were leaving the building, my wife stepped on a flat stone on the entry way to the steps and her foot went into a hole where the soil has washed away. She fell as a result. After helping her up, I went inside and asked the hostess to step out so I could tell her what had happened, and to show her the hole in the entry way. To my surprise, the hostess responded that she knew about it because she too had also stumbled and had nearly fallen. She said they knew it was dangerous and they were going to have to fix it.

In summary, we experienced very good waitress service, a bad menu, prices high for what they offer, and facilities in need of some work. The restaurant is owned by Mast General Store just across the highway which is a popular tourist site. With the acquisition of the Over Yonder Restaurant, Mast now has a place to send the tourists for a cheeseburger. It’s not a destination, upscale restaurant.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on our new restaurant. We are a new business, and not a continuation of the 1861 Farmhouse, and welcome feedback that will help us improve the quality of our menu, products and services. We are a casual dining and not a fine dining establishment with all that means in terms of menu, beverage selection and pricing. One point of clarification if we may, we are owned and operated by The Mast Farm Inn located in Valle Crucis a few hundred yards from Over Yonder, and which is unaffiliated other than as friends and neighbors with the very nice folks at The Mast General Store. We are giving some thought into introducing fine dining at night, and if so we are somewhat confident it may meet your expectations.
