We ended up at Blue Bear Mountain Camp during the government shutdown in mid-October. We had planned to camp in the Great Smokies and found ourselves scrambling to find somewhere else to go. We couldn't have made a better choice! The camp is an easy drive to town but is located high up on a beautiful mountainside and makes you feel like civilization is worlds away. I loved that the RV sites were well separated from the tent sites, and the tent sites are so well-spaced that it's easy to forget that there's anyone else around... and those aren't even the remote sites! Our site (T6) was spacious and clean, with a nice level pad to pitch our tent on, picnic table, fire pit and grill. The bathrooms were, by far, the cleanest camp bathrooms I've ever seen and I was thrilled to find honest to god hot showers that didn't turn to ice by the time you put shampoo in your hair. Steve, the proprietor, was fantastic - friendly and helpful - and made you feel right at home.
The property is huge, with some great hiking trails starting just behind the campsites. If you're so inclined, you can stay at one of the remote sites accessed along these trails, and Steve will drive your gear out for you. There's a pretty little pond by the remote sites as well - definitely worth the hike, which was definitely more challenging than just a stroll in the woods.
We ended up here by pure dumb luck, but it would definitely be my first choice if we're in the area again.
