The caves were just incredible. You start with a small museum visit on the history of mankind, then through a guided tour you learn about the history of the cave, then you travel down the long stairwell to the bottom. It was a hot day, but the temperature difference once your in the caves, drops by over 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Their are beautiful rock formations at the bottom, and certain areas closed off because Archaeologists are busy with digs discovering newer fossils of man.

to get back up to the top you have to crawl through small passageways, and that is why my title for this review is to watch your back. Normally I would have no trouble with this, but had strained my back several months before, so I could feel it as I was crouched down trying to get through the small openings. Beware of this if your not in good shape. Overall, it was a fun visit.

Zodwa with her amazing energy and great sense of humour was what made this tour exceptional. Always entertaining while informing. I've never met another tour guide with so much passion. I laughed so much on this tour :)

Every time I descend into the professionally maintained caves, I am reminded that the universe is so much bigger than my little sphere. I find a trip through the caves humbling and enjoyable. I enjoy the tales from the guides as they are so passionate about their role in educating the public. If you can coordinate your trip to coincide with a specialist tour with a scientist you are in for a real treat. Look at the website for the latest tours and be sure to book one, you will not be disappointed.

Dear Erica J

Your review of the Sterkfontein Caves is appreciated.

When you are next in South Africa, you need to experience the "Murder, Mystery event", with our Scientists. This is an event that will enthrall you and also provide a new perspective on the work done in forensic science.

We hope to welcome you back home soon

Pretty easy tour--you walk into the caves and drop into the depths--you get a talk from the guides, but I wasn't paying much attention as I was just in awe of the fact this is where it all started for mankind. The tour is pretty short, and winds up and down stairs and through a few tight crawl spaces. It's a very cool experience and worth a visit if you have a 1/2 day and are in JoBurg.

And just to be honest--this is one of those things you just do to say you did--why wouldn't you want to check out the caves?

you can see from the moment you arrive, they have plied a fair amount of capital into the building. Its not hard to see how this site became a UNESCO world heritage site. A thought provoking experience about where we could have come from and how the world looked in millennia prior.
