My husband and I camped here overnight. It was an incredible and really unique experience to sleep in a tent while hearing the waves right outside! The island is only accessible by boat, so after the last ferry of the day leaves with the non-campers, you basically have (what feels like) your own private island. Even though there are other campers on the island overnight, you don't really see a lot of them. Taking a long walk in the morning as the sun rose = priceless. A truly memorable camping experience for beach lovers. :)

This State Park is located on one of the famous NC Outer Banks, a natural chain of Ocean facing islands that protect the mainland and make for wonderful Atlantic Beaches. The entire island is the park and inhabited by wildlife and a few park rangers. Accessible only by State Ferry service at a small fee per person. A few brave souls try taking there own boat over to Hammocks Beach, also called Bear Island on some charts, but I have seen many boaters stranded on sand bars while trying to navigate the narrow channels that give access to Hammocks Beach.
This is a natural Outer Bank, there is very few amenities, few shelters, and no food for sale. Very limited water. You have to plan ahead to visit. You need to arrive at the Ferry in Swansboro early, have food and water for your entire stay, sunscreen, hats, extra food and water that you can share because there will be some who are not informed. There is walking to do, in deep sand from one side of the island to the other and back. Then when you decide to return, plan to have to wait because the ferry has limited space and everyone seems to want to return about the same time. Great time to make friends.
You can spend the night with prior arrangement with the Park Service. This is as close to nature most people ever get on the East Coast. The pristine beach is a treasure as well as the ferry ride to and from the mainland through the natural salt marshes.
Most people that have visited say they want to come back and bring kids and grandkids.

Pristine unspoiled beach! Great fishing at times, wonderful breezes and beach walking ALL the time. The park ferry is convenient and cheap. The visitor's center is a great starting place. Make time for it. The history is interesting. It is a small piece of heaven on earth.

Love taking the fun ferry ride to this uninhabited island. Walk for miles without seeing ugly buildings. We appreciated the snack bar and restrooms.

The ferry ride is great and sometimes you can see dolphins from the boat. Bring a stroller if you have small children because it is a .5 mile on a paved road to the beach on bear island. I love that there is a snack bar too.
The information center is small but nice. The staff does talks and activities throughout the season so you may want to check their calendar online.
