“Home cooking at it's best”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

You won't find seafood on the menu. Instead you will find comfort foods like turkey and dressing, beef stew, BBQ chicken, etc. If your taste buds are crying out for good old home cooking this is the place to go (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Everything is fresh and prepared right there. Our server was wonderful, talkative, and funny. If you enjoy spending time at the coast in the winter we were told they are open all year (except Christmas through Jan. 2). You can't beat the prices either. After you have stuffed yourself just walk across the street and walk on the beautiful beach or take a stroll out on the pier.

“great homemade food”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

Wonderful experiences at both breakfast and lunch. Priced good, especially since everything is fresh (not canned), and homemade! Nice interior, fast and pleasant service. We'll be back!

“Bay Breez' Has Diner-Style Food in Surf City”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Bay Breez' is a new restaurant in Surf City, located in the building previously occupied by Mollie's Restaurant. The name and their logo. with a surfer and a slogan of "Surfing up Good Food," implies that you might be able to order seafood here, but there is none, not even a flounder sandwich or shrimp plate.

Their fare is typical diner food with specials for the day . . . you know the kind of place, with an entree with two sides and some bread. If you come alone, you will be seated in corner by the bathroom so be mentally prepared for that.

I chose the fried chicken, which was good enough -- just average -- but the green beans were next to raw (and I am someone who appreciates non-overly cooked, tender-crisp green beans, but these were not even that), and the mashed potatoes were badly lumpy, with big pieces of hard potato throughout. The bread was a biscuit that looked like the pre-cooked, bagged kind so I did not try it.

The wait staff are pleasant enough but very "green." They will likely become more comfortable with time. The woman who is the greeter/seater needs to work on warmth, perhaps smiling and looking into the eyes of guests as she greets them. The staff talk to each other aloud, across the room -- something that is totally unacceptable in a restaurant.

People around me seemed to enjoy their meals. Some were eating barbecue sandwiches with slaw, and burgers and fries. Other menu offerings include barbecue chicken, turkey and dressing, pork chop and dressing, rib eye, spaghetti, country style steak, numerous sandwiches, salads, and wings.

I plan to give these folks another try for lunch or dinner, and I'll try them for breakfast. They will have a tough time living up to the old Mollie's Restaurant breakfast, which brought in people in droves, especially for the pancakes, so I am keeping my fingers crossed the Bay Breez' breakfast lives up to the legend.

Bay Breez's concept, they say, is to serve a wide range of foods but no fish or seafood, on the logic that so many other restaurants in the area are already serving seafood. However, with its name and logo, I don't think it would hurt Bay Breez' one bit -- and would cut down on the confusion and disappointment -- if they offered at least one or two of the more popular seafood items, perhaps a shrimp or flounder choice. In addition, there is a shrimp boat bringing in fresh shrimp and fish daily to a seafood market JUST TWO BLOCKS AWAY from this restaurant, plus Surf City is neighbors with Snead's Ferry, the shrimp capital of the East Coast.

I wish the best for this restaurant. They have a good location, fair prices, and a nice building, and with a bit of work on the cooking, they will do well.
