Sea Trail Golf Resort & Conference Center
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Sunset Beach
Reviewed August 23, 2007

We're not golfers, we stayed at recommendation of family mainly to visit the beach. Everything was average at best.

The room was small. We did the mini-suite, and it was as big as a hotel room (I wouldn't call it a suite). Guest rooms are tiny. There is no Internet access in the rooms, I had to go in the lobby.
There was a dead cockroach on the floor, potato chips under the bed, and the toilet paper holder fell off the wall. Bed was sagging. These condos are all independently owned, so your results may vary. There's an on-site cleaning crew, but they did not come in daily, just when we left. They leave a bag of towels outside the room in the morning, so we had towels piled up we didn't know what to do with.

The beach is convenient if you go in the morning to beat the traffic over the bridge. After the bridge go straight ahead into the parking lot for free parking. Come back in the afternoon.

This "resort" was not what I expected at all. The "guest room" is VERY small and was not in the best shape. We were informed of no resort amenities by the hotel staff (restaurants, shuttle services, etc). If you need someplace to stay, this will be fine, but if you want the room to add to any part of your vacation experience, go somewhere else - or spend the extra $30 a night to get one of their villas, which appear to be much nicer.

It wasn't the worst lodging experience, but it was very lackluster for a property that claims to be premier. Check-in took forever. We were there for a technology conference and had been told that wireless access would be complete by summer. Wireless was only available in the bar and the business center. The room was fairly clean when we arrived, but over the course of the week, the housekeeping service went downhill. By the end of the week, we had no tissue paper and limited towels. We had to call maintenance repeatedly for clogged tubs and a dysfunctional telephone. Bugs were a mild problem at times. The restaurant on property was "ok" but not what I would expect at a resort. Lunch each day consisted of a salad bar and one soup choice. We watched gators sulk around the water near the golf holes, making us happy not to be on the greens at times. Several areas of the clubhouse/conference center smell of water damage and mildew. The tennis courts were in need of upkeep -- tall blades of grass were growing up between cracks on the courts and plastic, overturned furniture was randomly scattered in corners of the court. The beach area itself can be congested and inaccessible. Cars wait in a long line to cross an old bridge to get to the beach itself. Restaurants in the nearby area were overpriced and often had poor health inspection ratings. I suspect this property was much nicer 5-10 years ago. They are having a hard time keeping it looking fresh and current.

This is a golf resort that hosts a lot of conventions. If you want the beach you should stay somewhere else because you will have to wait in a car line to drive across a drawbridge to get to a parking lot ($5) to walk down the street to get to the very crowded beach. The property itself is showing its age. We had a serious ant infestation. The staff have a "who cares" attitude. The unit near us had a fire alarm go off - the front desk told the lady "it's probably the a/c" and hung up. The fire department arrived with firemen swarming everywhere to see where the problem was - you might think that the front desk would do something - you would be wrong. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

My new laptop was stolen at this resort. There are NO video cameras anywhere on the property. Although it looks serene and secure, a 2 hour visit at the police station revealed crime is a constant there. Crack cocaine users in the area are common thiefs of PING golf bags, clubs, purses, and even the overhead projector from the conference center. The management staff was rude while I waited for the police to arrive.

Stay at your own risk---and watch your wife /daughter so they don't get abducted or mugged.

Sea Trail Golf Resort & Convention Center is a beautiful resort located in Sunset Beach, NC. We are open to the public on our golf courses, in our restaurant and at our Convention Center. The incident noted did unfortunately occur at Sea Trail's Convention Center during the time a convention was taking place. The laptop was left unattended and was removed from its location by someone other than it's owner. The local police were called to investigate. Fortunately, this type of incident is a rare occurrence at Sea Trail. Sunset Beach, NC is a small town community which is quiet and serene. Sea Trail is an expansive property filled with beautiful nature views at every turn. A far cry from an unsafe city street environment. Although the occurrence was unfortunate, the implication that Sea Trail is an unsafe place to stay is simply inaccurate.

My family regularly vacations at Sea Trail, and before this past visit I would have rated it as excellent. However, the state of the resort is quickly going downhill. When we arrived this time, we had to do a deep cleaning of the room because the maid service had not done a sufficient job (For example, there was a layer of pretzels and crumbs sticking out from the easily moveable sofa, and an inch of mold around the inside of the toilet bowl). Unfortunately for the golf fanatics in our family, the course has just gone under new management, and thus the green fees have increased significantly in price, however, the quality of the course, which was once pristine, has fallen under. I will say that the recreational facility is very nice, with a small gym with several tv's and a well manicured and kept medium-sized pool, however, during our stay, they allowed a day camp of about 20 kids from the next town over come in and use the facility, quickly overrunning the pool and tranquil atmosphere that usually abides there.

Although the condos have relatively thin walls and floors, we have never experienced a problem with noise, because the majority of Sea Trail vacationers go there for peace and quiet. However, the resort appears to be beginning to attract a noiser crowd, similar to that of Myrtle Beach.

It is really unfortunate that this has happened, because we loved Sea Trail prior to this visit. However, the clientele is quickly changing and the new management has not maintained the entire resort overly well. Sunset Beach is a wonderful place, but Sea Trail just isn't anymore.

We just spent 2 days at Sea Trail before going to Myrtle Beach. This is a very pretty resort with very nice accomodations. The resort is very large and you need a car to get around. There is a shuttle that takes you to the beach. I would suggest this resort if you have a young family and the beach wasn't your top priority. We usually stay at Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach and prefer the amenities it has to offer as well as the immediate access to the beach areas. We drove to Myrtle Beach for dinner both nights we were at Sea Trail. Our children range in age from 17-24 and they prefer the activities in Myrtle Beach to the quiet activities available in Sea Trail. One note, if you are in the Sunset Beach, Calabash area go to Calabash Creamery in Calabash! It is a fabulous ice cream shop where they make their own ice cream. They have a huge porch with lovely rocking chairs. The owners and staff are very friendly and it is very clean. Prices are reasonable. You will love it!
