One of our favorite places to visit to listen to authentic mountain music and watch some really good dancers! Good, clean family atmosphere. Hayrides available for a fee on certain days.

Great place to listen to country music or blue grass, clog, bite in fresh apple in season or just stop during a Blue Ridge Parkway ride. They have the best cider and many local produce and Appalachian information.

The Orchard at Altapass is to the Appalachian region what cowboy music is west of the Rockies. The music that’s performed is the voice of a people who could overcome the rugged isolation of the mountains with honest, heartfelt lyrics sung to toe tapping instrumentals. And you’re never just a spectator—you can get up on the floor and join in the dancing. The Orchard itself hangs onto the side of a mountain high up along the Blue Ridge Parkway and gives the visitor unrivaled views of the valleys and distant mountain ranges. Hayrides transport you through the decades old grove as your host regales you with the history of the region going back to the Revolutionary War. Besides apple products in season, there are condiments, plenty of sweet treats, books and music CD's to take home with you. If you’re there on the weekend, you can get a picnic lunch at the Food Wagon. And don’t forget to save room for ice cream—lots of flavors to choose from!

The Orchard at Altapass (http://www.altapassfoundation.org) is a great stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is located just out of Spruce Pine, NC on the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 328.3.. I learned it is a non-profit established by a sister, brother and his wife to preserve the history, culture and music of the area. They offer free live music most days during the season they are open which runs from May to November. Hayrides and story-telling, hikes through the Orchard, great ice cream and fudge along with lunch time fare as well. All the apple trees are heritage apples. Hot apple pie, fresh apples and a huge assortment of local foods and crafts. It is a wonderful family experience and a stop you will remember.

The owners of the Orchard at Altapass are doing everything right. They purchased the property to prevent it from being developed into condos or a golf course. They wanted to protect and promote the culture of the Mountain people in the area of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Little Switzerland is a beautiful area.
At the Orchard, local musicians are invited to play their wonderful Mountain music. Everyone is invited to dance...clogging is taught and children and adults alike pass along this great dance skill. The building at the Orchard houses many fascinating items for sale...local products for the most part. the Monarch butterflies are bred and released into the wild, while tagged for research. Hayrides...you MUST go on a hayride. Bill Carson will regale you with stories that date back to the war vs the British. His great-great-great grandmother was Sweet Lips and was part of the reason that the colonies won the War of Independence. It is all so much fun and is so uplifting. You have to go there.
