Visited family in Southport over the holidays. Went to Plaza Mariachi the day after Christmas. First off, on the outside, the restaurant doesn't look promising. The inside however is very nice. Very open and clean. The bar area is very inviting, comfortable booths, nothing like the 'hole in the wall' Mexican restaurants I've been to before. Food was wonderful! A great variety of menu items. Even finicky eaters have plenty of options. Cranberry Margarita was delicious. Everyone shared fried ice cream for dessert, which was a first for me! It was definitely worth the calorie splurge. Will go back the next time I'm in the area.

First of all, this location had a Mexican restaurant before Plaza Mariachi that tried everything to make a go of it with live bands and specials. It is always difficult for a any restaurant to overcome a prior failure, and especially a second Mexican restaurant in a row. Plaza Mariachi is definitely a contender for the long haul. The inside is very upscale in appearance with nice wood booths and comfortable tables and chair seating. There is a bar area in the back that is beautiful and welcoming with upscale stools and wide screen TVs. Think football and car race watching here for sure.

We were craving Mexican food and drove a little further past the other Mexican restaurant (that I previously reviewed) to the Wal-Mart Plaza where this is located in the front. We were warmly greeted and immediately seated in a booth. The waiter knew the menu well and could answer several questions about the items that facilitated the navigation through all of the options.

The menu has all of your normal combinations with tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas and chalupas that come with rice, beans for $7.75. There are also Mariachi's Specials, Taco, Seafood, Quesadillas and House Combinations sections on the menu with plenty of your traditional Mexican choices and options.

There were two menu surprises. There was a Vegetarian section ($7.25) that had five entrees with bean burritos, cheese enchiladas, chalupas, quesadillas, bean tostaguac and Rajas con Crema that is mixed vegetables stir fried served with a cream sauce with Mexican rice and salad for $7.99.

The other surprise was a children's menu section ($4.00 - $5.75) that included Taco and Burrito, Taco and Enchilada, Taco Rice and Beans, Enchilada Rice and Beans, Cheese Quesadilla and Rice, Burrito and Cheese Quesadilla and the mandatory Cheeseburger and Chicken Fingers.

Service was prompt with our Margaritas, chips and salsa that were all good but not outstanding. A team approach is used with multiple people bringing food to the tables that is great when you have large parties. We started with the Guacamole Mexicano appetizer that had chunks of avocado, tomatoes, onions and cilantro.
It had well balanced flavors with a large portion that did not disappoint. Then we ordered the chicken Burritos Deluxe $8.25 topped with lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream and the Gringo Special $13.50 that has grilled shrimp and scallops cooked with bell pepper, broccoli, green onions, squash and zucchini over a bed of Mexican Rice with Nacho Cheese.

The Burritos were very large and were presented well, however we needed to immediately ask for more sour cream as one spoonful on top was not enough. The chicken inside was not dry, but was slightly chewy with no evidence of any seasoning. The Gringo Special was very large and well presented with large shrimp and vegetables cooked to perfection. I noticed a few small pieces of scallops in the dish that were more of a distraction that a positive addition to the dish. There was not any evidence of the Nacho Sauce which may be something that the kitchen has removed from the entrée. Overall the dinner was very good with excellent service in a nice upscale bistro/grill type atmosphere that did not have any major disappointments.

We liked Plaza Mariachi so much that we ordered takeout the next time that we visited the beach. Again the food was well prepared and nicely packaged to go. There was one issue when I got home and noticed that the tortillas has been left out of the Carne Asada. We also did repeat orders on the Guacamole Mexicano and the Burritos Deluxe that were just as good, but still had the slightly chewy chicken without any seasoning. I called the restaurant and complained about the tortilla omission and was offered an apology, but nothing more than that. A free appetizer for the next visit would have been nice, as this was a critical omission to the entrée. Additionally when you are a new restaurant in a location that has had a prior Mexican restaurant failure, you want to make sure that the customers come back.

The bottom line: We will definitely go back and also get takeout again because the food was prepared well, priced well and served well. It is not the best Mexican that you have ever had, but it is far superior to the other Mexican Restaurant just down the road and well worth the extra mile or two drive. Hopefully Plaza Mariachi will overcome a few start up issues and survive for the long run.
