“If there is seafood and cheesecake in heaven . . .”
Reviewed May 20, 2014

For the third straight year three generations of our family enjoyed an evening at The Frying Pan, Southport's signature restaurant. We knew the view, the service, and the whole experience could not get better. We also thought the food could not. We were right about the energy and joy of the view and service we experienced, no way to improve them, but we were wrong abou the food.

We ordered widely from the menu, grilled, seared, and of course fried. Everything was fresh and flavorful, from the grilled shrimp and perfect steaks, to the pan-seared grouper and the bacon-rapped scallops, and presented in beautiful, ample portions. But the new home-run at the Pan is the BBQ and Shrimp plate! The shrimp is perfection fried. The BBQ is moist, tender, smokey, and lean. They go together perfectly. We also ordered the Safe Haven special, and got probably the best crab cakes on it we have ever tasted.

We were so stuffed we took home their signature sweet potato biscuits to have for breakfast the next morning. We are surprised they don't sell those by the dozen. We also split among ourselves a huge piece of cheescake, each of us taking a portion.

Let me put our meal this way: If there is seafood and cheescake in heaven, it will be delivered from the Frying Pan. Our family, three years in a row and three generations deep (so far!), will be back, and back again, everytime we visit Southport on vacation.

“Great Views, But Disappointing”
Reviewed May 20, 2014

If gorgeous open-air ocean views are what you want in a restaurant, you will love The Frying Pan, set in a new raised piling building above the mouth of the Cape Fear River overlooking the Frying Pan Shoals off Bald Head and Oak Islands. If it's food, ambiance, or price, though, you'll be disappointed. You'll find little but the typical fried seafood that predominates in this resort area, served in a clanging loud dining room amplified with piped-in music that made it difficult for our party to converse. Dinners, which cost $15 to $25, are served with poor presentation--most entrees in plastic baskets, water in plastic cups and coffee in styrofoam. The $25 fresh catch grouper consisted of a 3" x 3" piece of fish. Waitstaff was subpar, refusing our request for more butter, for example, pointing to the inadequate amount left in the little cup that came with our pre-meal hushpuppies. The focus was more on ripping our (sometimes unfinished) plates away from us, ultimately causing a reaction where cream was spilled all over the table. It didn't help that the hard wood chairs were painfully uncomfortable. (OK, the 4 of us are in our 50s and 60s, but that doesn't justify making us wake up still sore the the next day). Only pluses were the sweet potato biscuits and fresh vegetables (green beans) so uncommon at local tourist restaurants, and the lively entertaining staff at the bar.

“Filet & Scallops”
Reviewed May 11, 2014

This is the second year we have been able to enjoy The Frying Pan. The scenery is beautiful right on the water. Love the Filet with a side of grilled scallops. The kitchen is open and you can see everyone working very hard to serve their guest. Once again Craig nailed it in the kitchen. Cant say you could go anywhere else and get a better steak.

“"Jumping into the Frying Pan can be a Good Experience"”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

Whoa! This restaurant really rocks. The service was great Tracy and team. The fish especially those crab cakes with the cajun cream sauce was amazing. The seafood chowder was great too!!! Also being able to look through big glass windows at the ocean was awesome. All and all jumping into this frying pan was a good experience.
