Our party of four had a delightful dinner along with great conversation enabled by the artfully-spaced tables and beautiful bar set amid Mediterranean-decor. Don't let the "Bistro & Market" addition to the name fool you--Ports Of Call is a unique and welcome upscale addition to the comfort-food-loud-noise Southport restaurant scene with inspired dishes unlike anything else served locally. A big plus is how accommodating he chef is to what diners want, offering Tapas (appetizers) in two sizes so that diners can use larges as entrees if they want. Also offered are all sides such as house salads, vegetables, starches, so you can combine them and create your own meal. Ask and you shall receive! Our table shared the bread basket and a wonderful Cheese and Cracker tapa with exotic cheeses, capers, and fig jam for starters that was delicious. For dinner I ordered the delectable large Lightly Fried Oysters (12 qty) Tapa for $12, adding an asparagus risotto for $4.50. Other unusual entrees (amid the typical Crab Cakes, Shrimp, etc.) included a Mumbai Chicken Curry; Ravioli of the Day; Baby Back Ribs with Blueberry Chipotle BBQ Sauce; Corn Cakes Tapa with roasted red pepper, jalapeno, corn, goat cheese. Entrees range between $17-$25. Wines, while good, average an expensive $7/glass and then you only get 1/3 of a huge glass worth, a minor gripe. Only other disappointment was the most expensive dish, the Diver Scallops in an unbalanced Saffron, Orange, and Tomato Broth with too dominating tomato flavor and no herbs/spices to make it special, served with tender asparagus. Even so, we can't wait to go back!
