I confess to loving local museums. There's really no better way to pick up the local flavor. This one is nicely organized and tells the area's history very well. The collection of model boat is impressive and staff is very friendly.

I liked their attention to historical details, and their exhibit on locations used for recent filming of movies and tv shows in Southport.

There are only a few Maritime Museums in North Carolina and this one is FABULOUS!!! The exhibits are exceptional! There is incredible value and worth every second. And to make it even better, it is free. You can make a donation if you'd like but there is no pressure at all.

I highly recommend the NC Maritime Museum at Southport!!!
P.S. Don't forget to see the 360 degree view from the historic scope.

This Maritime Museum is a hidden gem! So much to see and learn about the maritime history in Southport and Wilmington. Great exhibits and very interactive for children. The best thing is it's FREE! A must-visit, if you are in the area.

This is a great place for adults and children. The museum has a wonderful location at the mouth of the Cape Fear River as it flows into the Atlantic. It is adjacent to historic Fort Johnston and the Southport Visitor Center. Check out the museum event calendar while you are there, you may be fortunate enough to be able to attend one of the exciting programs they sponsor-most at no cost. The museum staff is a wonderful resource for local information and history and guided me to other interesting sites.
