The Robert Ruark Inn is more of an experience than a place to just lay your head. From the moment we got there, we were greeted at the door with kindness and a vast knowledge of the history of the Inn. Apple & Pear Crumbcake was enough to make the trip for... but what stood out most was the "Nothing to much to ask for attitude", the service was top-notch, recommendations of where to go and what to see was geared toward personal preference, and not just a generic response of what's local. Trust David, when he tells you where the best walk on the beach is. Desserts are as good as it gets, and don't be shy, sit at the island/bar in the kitchen for great conversations. It's nice to go away for the weekend, and find yourself surrounded by calm and sunsets, truly a place touched by the hand of God. Before we left, we had cake-to-go wrapped up and waiting. We are going back...SOON! I almost for the "Sugar and Spice Bacon", it's the ultimate breakfast food, they should have to put an addiction warning on it.

My wife and I visited the Robert Ruark Inn to celebrate our 25th Wedding anniversary. I had hoped that our stay would be special, and Dave really made that happen. The Inn is beautiful in every regard, and Dave is the most gracious and delightful host we have ever met. Wonderful sense of humor and the kindest of gentlemen. His happy demeanor and the beautiful setting made us feel like family. The other guest felt the same way and everyone enjoyed our breakfasts together and sitting on the veranda in the afternoon. Our visit was truly a blessing. If you visit, you will leave with lighter heart and grateful spirit.

Although this Bed and Breakfast is not an ideal place for children because it is designed for adults, our host made an exception and allowed us to bring our two year old granddaughter. We were in the area to visit family on Oak Island and this B&B had been recommended. David, our host, was so welcoming and accommodating. His breakfasts were delicious and beautifully presented and he made special things for our little one, who referred to him at one point as "the man with the blue hat" (we had been reading her Curious George for those who understand the allusion). We recommend this B&B highly but it really is better for adults and we apologize to the couple who were there while we were there who may have preferred not having breakfast with someone in a high chair!

The Ruark was re-done with perfect taste. As an 1890 house, it needed to be late Victorian--an aesthetic not known for restraint--but the owners did use restraint, and the place is not festooned with doilies on everything and awful shades of pink, etc. We went to the Ruark on a very cold weekend just to hole up and relax, and for that you need surroundings that are pleasing and satisfying to look at. Every space in this b&b meets that criterion. The website has all the details and they are accurate. David knows exactly what he is doing as an innkeeper. He's super-friendly and attentive but isn't compelled to be in your face every time you are in the common areas. Wine and appetizers are out before dinner time. Coffee is out early, before breakfast. Downtown Southport and the riverfront are an easy walk from the front door. For the quality, rates are a good value. In short, there's a reason that the Ruark has a 100% rating on TripAdvisor. I'll just add to that.

We discovered the Robert Ruark Inn while searching for a place to escape snow and sub-zero temperatures. Little did we know that the web-site does not do the beautifully restored home any justice. The rooms are fantastic. David greeted us with a smile when we arrived, whipped up delicious breakfasts, and balanced accessibility and privacy perfectly during our stay. If you are looking for a romantic getaway, whether it be long or short, the Robert Ruark Inn is a wonderful option. We can't wait to return!

Absolutely LOVED it. Great location in Southport, very walkable. David Gale, the host, was wonderful and the food was out of this world. He is a great chef himself and he also sent us to wonderful places for dinner. I did not expect such great food and nice B&B in such a small town. We were in the Captain's room and the bed was very comfortable. Everything was top notch.
