“The Park Has A Fabulous History But Best Toured by Water”

Dismal Swamp State Park
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: Dismal Swamp State Park allows a unique wilderness experience in a landscape that has been witness to American Indian hunting parties, exploration by George Washington and the story of the Underground Railroad. The park features 20 miles of trails, beyond a 2,000-foot boardwalk that puts visitors in the midst of the Great Dismal Swamp. Birding and viewing abundant wildlife are favored activities. Mountain biking on the trails and kayaking the adjacent Dismal Swamp Canal are both encouraged. Visitors may bring their own equipment or rent at the park. Regular interpretive programs about the wetlands ecology and history of the famed swamp complement museum-quality exhibits in the visitor center.

Its better than okay, but its hard to see the really exciting things like the continuation of the digging of important native American and Underground Railway sites. But Lake Drummond is very impressive by boat. The trails are just okay unless you happen to see a bear.

For a VERY reasonable fee, take an hour (or more) to paddle the section of Intra-coastal waterway in North Carolina's Dismal Swamp. Pack a picnic lunch because you'll come off the water wanting a snack.
Take 15 minutes to orient yourselves with their movie and don't leave the Fabulous visitor center (Built 2008) without patting one of the two real (but stuffed) bears or their other park friends!
Unlike the ugly Troll, the very nice Park Bridge Keeper, will let you pass over to get there!
This half-day trip is Very fun - Very reasonably priced - and reveals a Very interesting chapter of our American Revolutionary Story.
Bring a water bottle, sun screen and sun glasses for the water and picnic lunch.
