If you're traveling in the mountains of NC near Asheville on Interstate 26 be sure to take a side trip to Saluda, NC. Saluda is a quaint one main street village that has a lot to offer. Be sure to stop in Ward's Grill for breakfast or lunch. It's open M-S from 6:30-3:00. The wait staff and cook are the friendliest ladies you will ever meet. My favorite breakfast consists of scrambled eggs and the BEST grits I've ever had outside of my mother's. Ward's has a full breakfast menu including hotcakes, biscuit and gravy, etc. They also serve homemade cobbler with ice cream if you're into desserts.
Tell the ladies Sharon sent me.

Finally got to try this place after hearing great reviews. I agree with those that say it is charming, friendly and reasonable. However, I really can't say it is anything special. Breakfast is good, and their sausage is excellent. The sandwiches and plates are adequate but nothing stood out as a "must have". Service was good and the waitresses are friendly and helpful. The food offerings are typical of a luncheonette, and are simple. I would eat here, again, but there are some more interesting places to eat in the area.

You want authentic cooking and service? Here it is. We had the cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. My husband has a chocolate milk shake. Wow. This brings you back to the lunch counter days. The locals were eating there. This place is the real deal.

Today we went to Ward's for lunch. I agree with another reviewer: one of the best hamburgers I've ever had. This grill is just what it is, and is not posing as a a "cute" retro place; it comes across as real, and for what it is, has great food. It is not "fast" food in any sense of the word, but the wait is worth it for us. There are many locals and regulars who eat there as well as travelers.
