“inconsistent.....”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

when we first came to this restaurant 3 years ago the food seemed to be much better...sometimes the service is overworked if it is a special event in saluda. sadly, you cannot count on it. perhaps they take on too much.

“Good Eats in a Small Town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

We do not pass through Saluda very often, but when we do, we make a point of eating lunch at The Purple Onion. The menu is a cut above the standard small town cafe, and everything is prepared fresh, even the salad dressings appear to be homemade. This last visit both my husband and I had excellent salads, preceded by an appetizer of hummus and pureed edamame with pita. The last was so good I asked for the recipe. A previous trip I enjoyed an outstanding tomato basil soup. Much of the food appears to be organic or regionally sourced, and all of it shows a chef's touch. We have never tried the homemade desserts, but they look delicious. A few miles outside of town is a beautiful waterfall on property managed by the Garden Club of Tryon - Pearson Falls. It is reason enough to visit Saluda, but The Purple Onion runs a close second. I highly recommend a stop in Saluda on your way to Asheville or other spots in the NC mountains.

“Worth the drive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Last week two friends and I ventured down the mountain from Kanuga Conference Center near Hendersonville, NC to the village of Saluda, NC for a great meal at The Purple Onion. Two seating areas were offered, in or out. We chose the covered outdoors as did most of the diners at that hour of 6:30 PM. We ordered flounder and trout dinners and were astonished at the presentation, the deliciousness and prompt servings. Bread pudding for dessert was fabulous. One friend had two beers and two of us split a half bottle of wine. With the tip, it was a well spent $40!

“Pricey but good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

Check out the desserts in the case on your left when you go in the door - wow. In nice weather, there is a covered outdoor dining area which is comfortable. Recommend the pizza! Great selection of beers and wines too. Dinner can be pricey so be prepared.

“Disappointing Service”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

I was in Saluda with friends who go there often to cycle. The Purple Onion was a favorite of theirs and we looked forward to Saturday night dinner. This trip was different in that they brought their children, one of whom has food allergies.

Before we went over to the restaurant, the mom called to make certain there was something at the restaurant her little girl could eat; if not, we would go somewhere else. The woman who answered the phone was clearly annoyed at the question and curt with my friend, getting her off the phone with out answering the question. My friend called back, got the same rude person and was told there was a steak dinner that would work before my friend could ask a follow up question she was hung up on. Very frustrated she called back to ask if a follow up question. I am not sure what the woman at the restaurant said but my friend hung up in tears and left the room. Needless to say we went elsewhere.

My suggestion would be if a business has someone dealing with the public, she be pleasant and informed. Unfortunately, food allergies are all too often these days and for a restaurant to not be knowledgeable on what they serve and to be rude when asked is not acceptable.
