“Worn but good food”
Reviewed February 9, 2014 via mobile

We stayed at the castle Hotel in York early February 2014. It is a historic hotel, the oldest existing inland hotel in Western Australia. It Has traditional hotel accommodation as well as motel suites. Very friendly service.
Well, the hotel is old and that is very obvious. The rooms are spacious but in dire need of renovation. It looks and feels old and worn. No wifi!! No clothes hanger in the hotel room. Bed lamps did not work, no desk lamp, no telephone in the room, no hairdryer, in the bathroom just a small bar soap, no shampoo nothing else. Shower is in the bathtub which was dirty and partially covered by black mildew.
The curtains in the room were dirty and torn. The TV set was new, however.
External areas e.g. parking lot and swimming pool not well taken care of, looks dirty.
Dining, however, is surprisingly good. Interesting offer of country cuisine. Extensive wine and beer list. Breakfast just a plain continental one, nothing special.
Has bistro and public bar as well as Thirsty Camel drive thru bottle shop.
Despite all of that, the hotel is not cheap
We would not stay there again.

Like the rest of York this place has the most fantastic facade, promising something special inside. Unfortunately there is much that needs to be done inside. Our room was spacious and reasonably comfortable, but it looked very tired and needing upgrade. The most important features of a room - the bed and the bathroom especially needed attention. We were told the electricals had just been upgraded, so hopefully the rest will follow in the near future. For a hotel aspiring to offer great accommodation, the breakfast and dinner options were also disappointing, but again a little TLC would easily overcome this.

We've stayed a few times at the Caste Hotel and each time we are impressed with the great country hotel atmosphere. The dinners in the bar are excellent, rooms are nice and the staff are aways really friendly. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back of the hotel. Air conditioner noise in the front rooms can get a bit m...

Ok, firstly I've come to the conclusion that people generally are motivated to write reviews when places are outstanding, or they're really dissatisfied. And given that the Castle isn't outstanding I expect that's why the reviews are so poor.
I was booked in here with work, and after a quick look at Tripadvisor my alarm bells were ringing as I do place a lot of faith in the reviews on the site. The place is a decent enough place to stay in rural and regional Western Australia. There are no Sheratons in York, and provided your expectations are reasonable, you will probably be satisfied.
Certainly a long way off the worst place I've stayed in. Staff, by the way, have all been helpful and polite.

This hotel has a wonderful website, loudly singing its unjustified praises. The hotel is over 150 years old, brick built on a street corner in typical Australian country hotel architecture but with the added feature of Acrow props supporting its veranda! The bar areas seem virtually unchanged since 1850 and the 'new' motel style rooms, whilst spacious, are poorly furnished and very much in need of renovation during which the 1970's CRT television sets might find a place in the nearby museum! The included continental breakfast is very much 'self-service', with no sign of staff should one want the alternative 'full Australian'. The restaurant and other public rooms are dingy, badly decorated and very much in need of a deep clean and redecoration. The small swimming pool is poorly maintained. What a pity that the nearby, renovated York Hotel seems to have met its demise and is for sale. Conclusion - avoid York, stay in nearby Northam (30km) which has several good hotels - old buildings maybe, but well refurbished!

Room Tip: The 'new' rooms are better, but the hotel is best avoided altogether!

Old, dirty, and very very loud! We stayed in York over a weekend in the Castle hotel and both nights were kept up to midnight listening to the karaoke outside on the bar pation. It was pretty much like we were sitting in the bar!

Beds were old and sagging, cockroaches in the room around the fridge / coffee area.

Pretty much one of the worst places i've stayed for a while, and all for only $150 a night!

Room Tip: make sure your room i nowhere near the bar!

Although this hotel is very old it was quite good. I am on oxygen 24/7 but still love to swim. We were able to get a suite right next to the pool. I was looked after like a QUEEN. Whatever we needed we got. The beds could have been more comfortable and the TV reception was not good. The food was excellent. The tarrif was very good. I will do this again for sure.
