Having been to j ward a couple of weeks ago, (see review), we wanted to come back to see aradale. We booked the Saturday night ghost
Tour online and on arrival booked at the information Centre for the day tour on Sunday. Cost of the night tour $35, day tour $20.
Arrived at the gate of Aradale at 10.15 pm for the 10.30 tour, no one in sight. Rang the tour company but no answer. Finally found our way to the heath street entrance 30 mins late but found someone to let us in. What a disappointing experience! A very theatrical presentation causing a lot of screaming among the young girls . No ghost detecting equipment in sight despite this being promised on the website. Not an issue for us as we were there for the sense of history and knowledge of the institution . This was sadly lacking. A lot of stories that incorporated some of the tour people but all dramatized and at times very inaccurate. (I've been a psych nurse for 30 years). Eventually finished just before 1.30 am, very tired and very bored!
Next morning arrived at 10.45am for 11am start. An immediate difference! The tour guides Phil and Dave were knowledgeable, interesting and well informed. You could feel the sense of dedication and responsibility they felt towards ensuring that tourists understood what it was like for patients and staff, without any drama and all the time feeling pride in the history of their major tourist attraction . This tour is run by the friends of j ward as is the j ward tour and the difference between people who care and tours for money is very noticeable. Thank you Ararat for once again a great weekend, great accommodation and great food!

A great fun filled night of interesting facts from our past some not so pleasant, guide had loads of information. Perhaps the only thing which was not so good - the group on the tour was large and took some of the appeal away. Other wise a great evening spent with plenty of laughs and suspense.

This was a brilliant night. Tour guide Paul had us all loaded up with all the ghostbusting equipment we could manage. EMF meters, thermometers, night vision... Some cool stuff was detected and the spirit box seemed to pick up things too. Guide would offer alternate explanations as normal which was great when something happened that had NO explanation! Very cool night. I even hopped into the morgue drawer on the table... creepy!

I went on a night ghost tour here at Ararat Lunatic Asylum last Halloween. I was very impressed with our tour guide, a lovely middle-aged man whose name I have forgotten. He was very engaging and gave a thorough outline of the history of the place (I think he even ended up working overtime that night in order to give us the chance to see everything in full!). We had the freedom to walk into old gaol cells, the chapel, even the morgue! We had some paranormal equipment, and of course our focus was on the possibility of a supernatural encounter, but our guide was equally as focused on educating us about the area as he was about the possibility of ghosts, which I found really valuable. We had a few orbs turn up in our photos, and a few of us heard some footsteps behind us, but in terms of the supernatural occurrences there it wasn't too creepy. That didn't matter though - our tour guide made it a truly excellent night full of historical information, and we hope to return this Halloween to do it all again!

Huge historic building sitting on a hilltop. Spooky drive in the dark to get there and a very dominating building which made the hairs on your arms stand up. Many tales of the insane residents and what their lives were like in Aradale Lunatic Asylum. The things that went on behind those doors, it was A real insight into Australia medical/mental history and how sad and unjust it was. Our guide was very knowledgable and loved to tell stories, but I would have liked to have heard more facts. Glad I went. An interesting and informative fun thing to do.
