“Really Interesting”
Review of Map The Miner

Map The Miner

This is one place that you need to see. The walk is a easy and enjoyable. The history of this mine is rich in information and the colours are amazing. If you go there after the rains and there is water in the pit take your camera.

Map The Miner, or "Map Kernow" as he is also known, has greeted motorists on the southern limits of the town of Kapunda since 1988 as they enter the town travelling from the direction of Gawler/Adelaide.

Map The Miner is a 7.5 metre statue of a cornish miner, and a tribute to the copper miners who worked in Kapunda in the 19th century. The landmark includes a statue, some information on historic Kapunda & the mines, and the miners of the era.

Kapunda is a relatively small country town but has a surprisingly interesting history, and so the idea to build Map The Miner reminds visitors travelling into the town that Kapunda is not an inert town with no background. Anyone who has travelled the area knows the statue, so it is probably the best known attraction in Kapunda, despite the town having a museum, historic mine, an art gallery, and even a nearby aviation museum (in Greenock).

Unfortunately, the original Map The Miner statue was destroyed by fire in 2006, when a prank from a local teenager involving making a ring of fire at the base of the statue went wrong. Thankfully it was insured, and so the statue today is actually a remake that was completed in 2007.

Given Kapunda's size, I rate the landmark as a "very good". I have seen the Statue Of Liberty with my own eyes, and while Map The Miner might not be quite to that lofty esteem, given the adjustment for the size comparisons between New York City and Kapunda, I think Kapunda have made a great effort in building an instantly recognized landmark for travellers to the town, and added in the local history out of interest. It might only be a 15 minute stop, but it's well worth taking a look.

Well done Kapunda !
