Description: La Pecora Nera (The Black Sheep) is an Authentic Italian Eatery (Woodoven Pizzeria & Osteria) located in the picturesque town of Burra in the mid-noth of South Australia. Everything revolves around the magnificent wood-fired oven. It's Italian food as it was meant to be - fresh, vibrant & delicious - the closest you can get to dining out in Rome without traveling to Rome itself! Our ever-changing menu includes: Antipasti (cured meats, cheese, olives & other delicasies) ; Insalate (Salads) & Insalatoni (Big Salads); Pasta (both durum wheat & gluten free); Traditional Woodoven Pizza, Dolci (Sweets & Deserts); Gelati & Caffe (Coffee) Buon Appetito!

I had received multiple recommendations to eat at this restaurant so it was a must for my recent trip to the Clare - making the extra 40km drive to visit Burra. I really liked the buzz in the place, and the no frills butchers paper table cloths, shared long tables and the verbal specials menu and recommendations. We started out lunch with super mouth wateringly tasty oysters. Unfortunately we then waited over an hour for our antipasto plate and had to chase the waitress about this more then once. I understand sometimes waiting is just part and parcle of a busy restaurant but when everyone else around us is being served and almost on to deserts, we were feeling forgotten about. One of the male waiters was pretty sloppy in his service, slapping plates down without a word, when trying to get his attention he would just point to one of the female waitresses indicating 'speak to her, I'm not here to look after you'. Yes, the food was good, the pizza that we were finally served after being there for almost 1 hr 45 mins was delicious, and I'd almost consider going back there again just for those oysters. But substandard service made my experience one that I probably wont repeat.

Paolo and I really wanted to apologize to you guys for what happened on Sunday – and thank you for being so honest in your review. Heads rolled after Sundays service – we really make a point of serving our guests well and warmly, and for us that means both getting the food out as quickly as possible and making people feel at home and well taken care of, and we really let you guys down on both counts. This last weekend we became acutely aware that there was a problem with that waiter you mentioned in your review, and Paolo has been quick in dealing with it. We rely on our team working well together and definitely to be on the same page in regard to our philosophy of service. The miscued communication and lack of team spirit from said waiter that resulted in your antipasto going awol is a not a scenario to be repeated in our osteria! If on your travels you find yourselves back in Burra we really hope to give you a much better experience, and one to remember for all the right reasons. Many thanks again for your feedback. Clare & Paolo Vitozzi at La Pecora Nera (The Black Sheep)

Had the best lunch out with friends at one of the "long" tables at La Pecora Nera - great selection of pizza and pasta, with the pizza made in the huge wood fired oven in the restaurant. Serving sizes were giant. Liked the friendly owners, the great authentic Italian food and that you could help yourself to the little drinks fridge and just let them know when it was time to settle your bill what you had consumed.
It wasn't just a lunch, it was a great experience.

Staff running around madly - the place was hopping with people, kids, staff and pizza everywhere - but a warm, enviting, fun environment to have a great pizza on a cold winter night - I wonder if they do breakfasts?

Dinner at this charming restaurant was a memorable experience- lovely food in a warm, inviting environment. The owners, Clare and Paolo, welcome you with wonderful Italian pizza straight from the wood-fired oven- simple, fresh ingredients on a thin crust, so much better than the stodgy mess that passes for pizza in North America. You can also order fresh pasta with inventive sauces. We particularly enjoyed one with pumpkin and fresh rosemary! Desserts are a special treat. Be sure to try the cheesecake and Italian hot chocolate- divine. If you're planning a visit to the Clare Valley, you won't be disappointed with a stop at La Pecora Nera.

Advertises itself as a genuine Italian Restaurant, and there is no denying that the owner/manager/chef is indeed Italian. However, there is an expectation that the customer asks what is on the menu for the day, since the only menu otherwise presented is an array of pizza options. To the uninitiated first timer (like me), the only way you discover that other options are available is by realizing that others (whom I presume to be returnees), are ordering something other than pizzas.
The waitress was a little haphazard in her relaying to customers what was available, and appeared to be more intent on impressing people with her ability to multitask (not always well), rather than providing good customer service.
Décor is very simple but having paper table cloths along with a container of crayons allowed children (and adults) to design their own table decoration.
Pizzas come only in one (14 inch) size, so unless you intend to devour one on your own, some negotiation will need to be made with your partner as to the type ordered.
While I make no claim to be a connoisseur of Italian food, it is a favourite style of food I like, have eaten it frequently, including in Italy itself. To me, the pizza served at La Pecora Nera was bland, and lacked the usual (expected) Italian spice and flavour.
I did chance a lemon cheesecake for dessert (after asking what desserts were available), and at least this had some flavour, but nowhere near what you get in Italy itself.

Dear FlyingKiwi, Thankyou for your feedback - its much appreciated and taken on board, especially about you not being aware of what was available on the menu for the day apart from La Pizza. La Pecora Nera is indeed an Osteria as well as a Pizzeria - it's a specific style of Italian eatery, a little different in style to a Ristorante... At an Osteria the menu changes daily according to season and the focus in on good country food in a relaxed atmosphere. It's a great type of eatery to look for when you are travelling in Italy (there are many different types - Trattoria, Ristorante, Pizzeria, Osteria, Enotecca....!), because the food you will find in an Osteria is usually down to earth and good value. Paolo and I are so sorry that we weren't able to give you the experience we always aim to give the people who come to eat with us. We wish you and your family all the best in your adventures in Australia - Buon Viaggio!
