Owner description: One of the oldest parks in Queensland, Queens Park boasts enormous, shady trees dotted around the picturesque green expanse on the hill at the eastern entrance to the city. A perfect place to spread out the picnic rug, fire up the barbie and spend a pleasant few hours. If you're not such a BYO person, the indoor-outdoor Queens Park Café offers everything for the hungry park-goer, including a special Kids' Menu. Next door to the Café, is the Environmental Education Centre with some fun interactive displays. Queens Park's playground was inspired by Ipswich's coal mining history, with an impressive design incorporating a flying fox, fixed model train, Liberty Swing for people in wheelchairs to enjoy a ride, and water pumps. And if that's not enough, there are two more amazing, free attractions - the Japanese-themed Nerima Gardens, and the Ipswich Nature Centre which has been delighting visitors since 1936. Enter the Ipswich Nature Centre through the historical rotunda and be charmed by wallabies contentedly nibbling or dozing, and other native animals such as wombats, emus, bilbies and water birds in their authentic habitats. Then there's the barn where the younger ones won't be able to resist farm animals such as pigs, calves, guinea pigs and lambs. Nerima Gardens was designed in consultation with Ipswich's sister city in Japan. A model traditional Japanese tea house, constant sound of flowing water, winding paths and charming gardens make this a tranquil and calming space. A unique factor is that Australian native plants have been used, with some being indigenous to Ipswich.

Brilliant family friendly park with lots to do. The playground will keep kids busy and should satisfy toddlers to kids about 8 to 9 years. The playground includes a climbing frame, flying fox, swings and a safe water feature. The Australian animal zoo is worth a visit and both strollers and wheelchairs are catered for. Entry to the zoo is free but there is a donation box so pop a few coins in it so they can continue their work. There is also a Japanese gardens to visit (look out for the dragons), plenty of wide open spaces for picnis or a children's party, a cafe that has a wide range of food and coffee, as well as free BBQs. There is also plenty of parking (under trees) in the park. Even though its a popular park it never feels overcrowded. All this means you could happily spend a great few hours in this park.

Beautiful garden hidden away in Queens Park, the Nerima Gardens was created by gardeners fro the city of Nerima in Japan as a gift to the people of Ipswich and what a gift! It is very peaceful and is exactly like many gardens you will come across if you travel in Japan. It is full of water dragons and there are turtles in the pond as well as ducks and crows. There is a small teahouse which has been constructed using traditional techniques, but unfortunately is not open to the public. Be a great place for a picnic, away from the business of the rest of Queens Park. Outside of the Japanese gardens you will find toilet facilities up the hill and a little further along a nice looking cafe.

We decided on a friend's recommendation to head out to Ipswich for the Nature Reserve. We were really pleased we made the effort. Our boys loved seeing all the lizards swimming around in the waterways and enjoyed the Barn area too. I really loved the Avery which was a lot larger than it looks from the outside.
It was a great few hours spend for only a gold coin donation, amazing value!!
We then headed over to the outdoor parks area for some climbing fun. There is even a flying fox which was great to burn off some energy.
