Firstly lets start with the positives. This hotel is ideally located a few minutes walk from the coach station and opposite the train station- great for when you want to make those day trips to Marsala, Mazara dell Vallo etc. It is also just around the corner from the elegant main shopping boulevard, Via GB Fardella-one end of which takes you to the historical centre of Trapani and the other extends to the stunning little hilltop town of Erice (a must visit!). There is a lovely park opposite and lots of gelateria’s, cafes, restaurants and shops within walking distance. In fact you can walk around Trapani with ease as it is a clean, compact and lovely little city with much to see and do. The hotel is only a couple of minutes walk from the seafront from where you take leisurely strolls into the old town and watch the most stunning sunsets! Truly amazing and romantic. Watch out for the stray dogs though- they seem to be everywhere in Sicily.
We had a double deluxe room on the 6th floor which was lovely and spacious with good air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities and comfy bed. The bathroom was lovely and spacious too. However both rooms were let down by the poor quality of cleanliness-there was visible dust on surfaces in the bedroom the walk in shower had not been cleaned properly and the floors needed hoovering- neither improved during our 4 night stay. Would be minor gripes in a 2 star hotel but given this is a modern 4 star hotel, I would expect higher standards of cleanliness. Lovely hotel but lack of attention to detail by cleaning staff is letting it down.
Breakfast was included in the price and was a very good- in fact it was delicious. There was a great selection of cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt, breads, jams, cakes and pastries as well as a hot selection of food. Coffee was good although luke warm on a couple of occasions-probably more to do with the down in the mouth miserable breakfast staff who showed very little interest in who they were serving or what they were serving. Neither of the 2 gentlemen we encountered throughout our stay mustered up the energy to say a buongiorno or make eye contact. A real shame - great hotel, great breakfast but breakfast staff letting it down.
Drum roll please!!! In all my years of travel, I have never encountered such a bizarre check in which would leave one feeling…well that would depend on one’s own disposition I guess. Personally we were left feeling a little bemused and somewhere in between bursting into fits of giggles and ‘excuse me but who do you think you are speaking to us like that’.
What I am about to say excludes Ingrid and the lovely Italian lady with glasses- both of whom were pleasant and helpful enough although they did chunter in Italian when they had to print bus timetables out for us. Unfortunately when someone feels it professional to strutt their stuff in pink hot pants and a grey vest without a name badge on, chew gum like its going out of fashion, take personal mobile calls whilst guests are waiting to check in or require information, show PDA over the reception desk in front of guests, find it too bothersome to lift one's head from the computer when guests are waiting for service and not once bother to say ciao or buongiorno, it makes it very hard to say anything positive about this particular individual as her attitude did not improve during our 4 night stay.
She was chewing gum whilst checking us in, made zero eye contact, barked…..yes barked at us to give her our passports, slammed the keys on the counter and turned away to continue her personal business. We were left gobsmacked and glued to the spot by this rather rude yet surreal experience, a first during our trip around Sicily or anywhere else in the world! I proceeded to ask for a map…chuntering and huffing ensued with a map smacked down onto the counter, black marker round the hotel and main street…off you go. Fortunately we were in good spirits and were not going to allow this extremely rude individual to spoil our mood so we laughed about it. There is always Tripadvisor to vent on instead!! During our stay we made sure we were in high spirits and greeted staff with hello’s and had little chats…..with everyone apart from Ms Epitome of Rudeness.
Overall, a lovely hotel situated in a prime location to explore the absolutely lovely town of Trapani. Great rooms, great breakfast but a real shame that the hotel personnel are letting this place down by not taking any pride in what they do. Despite the poor attitude of certain members of staff who we thankfully did not need to interact with a great deal, I would still recommend this hotel to others and stay here again for the aforementioned positive reasons. Unfortunately due to the lack of good ambassadors for Hotel Crystal, I have had to mark it down. All current staff could do with some customer relations training. Maybe the lovely Rita from Una Palace Catania could teach them how it’s done!!
