“Sad rooms, sad breakfast buffet, overpriced, great location and nice dinner.”
Reviewed May 22, 2010

We wanted desperately to like the Alpenhof as I had a cold and we arrived very late at night, we were tired and planned to stay in the area for several days! Our first impression of the hotel and grounds (even in the dark) was good. It was wood paneling in the Bavarian style everywhere in the hotel, cozy and cute. We were starved and went straight to the cozy and inviting hotel restaurant. They were so kind to us with our broken German - service was outstanding! We had a delightful meal and retired to our room.

That is where the fun ended. The room was not clean and overall dated. It was a nice size, the furniture was dated, but nice enough. The carpet was worn and not clean looking. The bedding, too looked dated. The room had not had a good cleaning in quite a while. The lamps by the bed had not been dusted as i could seen tons of dust piled-up on the lamp, curtains and headboard. The bathroom was tiny and shower difficult to even get into - and we are both normal sized people. Sleeping was not easy due to the cleanliness issue, flat pillows and yucky bedding.

The Euro breakfast was about a 3 out of 5 stars. The coffee was watery and lukewarm. They had most of the accoutrements of the Euro breakfast, but none were very fresh looking. The best of the buffet was the breads which were the typical German brotchen and the homemade jams and cheese were fine. The other items were not very memorable.

The pool and sauna and fitness areas were also not what we have seen for other European hotels in this price-range. Old, dated tiles in a dark room.

Overall, very gracious staff, beautiful location and grounds, but the rooms and the breakfast do not live-up to the pricetag. We ultimately moved on after that night because we couldn't justify the pricetag for that level of quality of rooms.

We stayed 2 nights in August 2009, 2 adults and a 13-year old, in a mini-suite facing the Zugspitze. The room was beautiful, and very well appointed. The front desk staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, and spoke perfect English. English was a little more rare with the restaurant staff, but they tried hard. The dinning room menu was not very extensive, but the food superb. Breakfast buffet was fantastic and we ate outside on the patio every morning, looking at the Zugspitze. Requests for room service and housekeeping service were fulfilled very quickly. There is a beautiful, large garden with lounge chairs and stream running through the property, as well as an outdoor foosball table and giant chess set. There are small, but adequate, exercise facilites and a very nice indoor swimming pool. The hotel is extremely quiet, but very convenient to Garmisch on one side, and Neuschwanstein Castle in the other direction. When we checked out, the owner presented us with a gift basket of local food delicacies.

We stayed here in December 2005, but I don't believe the hotel was on TripAdvisor at that time, so I never wrote a review.

I'll second everything the other reviewer said. The staff is very welcoming and the entire hotel is quite homey feeling. The food in the restaurant was quite good. The hotel's owner didn't seem to speak English, but he still made it a point to stop at our table at breakfast and dinner every day to say hello and make sure we were comforable. He gave us a gift of marzipan when we left. The rest of the staff spoke English well.

The hotel itself is located on the outskirts of Grainau, which is a bit outside Garmish-Partenkirchen. It was so quiet and peaceful out there.

We had a room on the back of the hotel that looked out over some trees and out to the mountains and the Zugspitz, and with the 10 or more inches of snow we received every day, it was just beautiful. On at least one day, the hotel staff had brushed all the snow off our car for us in the morning before we went out for the day.

The room was cozy and comfortable and had a half wall divider with curtains between the sleeping area and the sitting area, where the balcony was located. Having an extra set of curtains between the windows and the bed made for even better sleeping in during the cold mornings.

All in all, this was a comfortable and warm place to stay, and we'd definitely stay there again if we were ever back in the area.

Introduced to us by some friends who lived in Germany for a while, our 5 days here were wonderful. A genuinely warm welcome within stunning scenery.

We had intended to be near a ski resort but not in it so that we (myself, wife and three children 7, 5 & 3) could try skiing by the day without being stuck with nothing to do if it didn't work out.

Flights to Munic and hired (massively overpriced) car from Avis. 100km south, Grainau is a village just outside Garmish-Partenkirchen. Roads very easy.

The hotel is modern but built in a traditional style, especially the interior. They have family rooms with loads of space. There aren't special features such as child-listening so families with very little ones might struggle. But the whole atmosphere was one of welcoming and accepting families. Ours are not the quietest, unfussy eaters but there wasn't a frown or comment made.

There's a large indoor pool, saunas, steam room etc.. Be aware though, that pool is same depth throughout and although I could touch the bottom on tip-toe (I'm 5'9") it did make controlling three kids quite hard work!

Nice gardens with large public playground just outside the back gate. Also outside the gate (max 2 mins walk) is the large municipal pool with kids pool, sun rooms and (summer only) significant outside pools, slides etc.. All of this with the backdrop of mountains towering thousands of feet above you.

Restaurant has excellent choice of regulars and a la carte. One drawback ...menus in german only but most staff speak very good english. Pushchair, sledges and bikes (cycling very popular locally as valley is large and flat) available to borrow.

Skiing is very easy to access; hotel can sell ski passes at non-inflated prices. Car parking at foot of cable-car is plentiful. MUST take the train up to the Zugspitze (highest peak in Germany) where skiing is great and views are spectacular. Return travel by cable car or the train. Station is just 15 minutes walk from hotel.

Lots and lots to do locally ...we just scratched the surface. Garmish is a nice town although prices are high for almost everything. Very traditional so vitually everything closed on Sundays. Incredibly clean and efficient place. Puts many UK towns to shame.

Would certainly consider visiting here again.
