This was a lovely alpen hotel -truly beautiful. It is in the small village of Grainau, a little east of Garmish-Partenkirchen and is very convenient to the Zugspitze and Lake Eibsee. It is very very charming and has spectacular views. The rooms are not super large but are very nicely and charmingly decorated and have beautiful balconies with fresh flowers and a view. (I don't know if all rooms have this.) Basically, gather up the picture perfect idea of an alpen hotel and this is it. The hotel also has a lovely small lobby sitting area and large terrace. We had two adjoining rooms for ourselves and our two young sons, which worked out very well. I had done all the reservations online myself, and the staff was very helpful and responsive in suggesting different room options that would work for our family. The bathrooms are also not super large - you aren't going to get a huge shower, it's a smaller stall, - but are modern and clean. The service is very genial and helpful, although if you are looking for perfect fluent English like in a big hotel in Berlin, you probably won't find it. Personally, I like that it was more traditional and I really don't speak much German at all and got along just fine. If you need English maps and all, you just need to go to the little tourist office down the hill in Grainau, as they only had German ones at the hotel. This hotel is known for it's restaurant - which is indeed excellent. We got the European plan which was a wonderful value and made things easy knowing we could hike all day and come back and eat dinner at the hotel. Our waiter was so accomodating and friendly. They did have the menu printed in English. The food was wonderful and worked out just fine for our kids. There were a couple of choices of each course each night on the european plan menu. Breakfast is a very very nice traditional German breakfast buffet, but they serve you the coffee. Lots of fresh breads, muesli, hams, smoked fish, etc. There is a separate breakfast area. There was a small bar, I will say I never saw anyone it in - I think they might have had a bartender there in the apertif hour (4-6 - but we were never at the hotel at that time) but not after dinner when we looking, but we got our after dinner drinks in the restaurant. The hotel also has a very nice spa and small indoor pool. My son really enjoyed swimming there, and it has enclosed glass walls so you get to swim while viewing the alps. Very cool. THere is also a traditional finnish sauna. All very nice. Basically, a very beautiful hotel, charming and gracious, modern where you want it to be, but with some old fashioned touches. Highly recommend. I would definitely stay here again if returning to the area. We stayed three days, and it wasn't enough.

Stumbled in, road weary and hungry on a rainy night. They kindly kept the kitchen open in the restaurant to feed us---delicious dinner, beautiful dining room, fine service. We opted for an upgraded room with a view towards the back of the Inn and were so happy we did as the view of the mountains the next morning was outstanding. They loan out hiking poles for the motivated and will direct you to the Grainua community pool and spa down the road for a very pleasant experience. Enjoy!

Stayed in Grainau many times before at B&B's, but this is by far the best experience I have encountered. Excellent hotel, very well cared for, the facilties are gorgeous, the decor is beautiful very comfortable and very inviting to relax in the lobby/bar area for afternoon tea, with the stunning views of Zugspitze from every window. The rooms are beautifully decorated, every comfort imaginable and they are spacious as is the bathroom and modern amenities. Definitely choose a room with a view of Zugspitze and the forest. The service and staff are very accommodating, the fine dining restaurant is well worth the splurge, the menu is awesome as is the food, and service. No worries about english translations, it works out well as the waiters understand and are able to translate. The location is great, a short stroll into the town center or a short drive into Garmisch-Partenkichen or to the Lake Eibsee. Really the best place to stay in Garmish to experience the natural beauty of the area and the local hospitality. Great breakfast buffett as well. My only suggestion is the pool temperature is way too cold, could not enjoy as it was frigid, should be heated warmer in colder seasons so you can enjoy before a massage. The massage rooms are to light, they could sue some dimmed lighting and soft music to soften the experience.

We stayed in an apartment with our 4 & 1 year olds for 8 nights. The room was very clean & well-kept with a lovely, almost French, rustic look. The views were amazing, without obstacle with the hotel set on top a hill. We had no trouble finding it. We only ate the complimentary breakfast which was yummy. The restaurant was clearly popular at night though. We didn't eat there because we don't know enough German to translate the menu, & the staff didn't seem to speak that much English or have much interest in helping us out. The staff was mostly friendly, but we felt snubbed a lot by one of the bartenders/waiters. The cleaning staff were the nicest. The village is lovely, very Bavarian, but not much English. We got by, but went to Garmisch-Partenkirchen a lot for meals. The wood carving shop was wunderbar. There is not enough parking for a full hotel. We managed to find a place each night, but a few times it was created by us parking right next to the door. There is a garage that holds about 6 cars, & it didn't help much. They did give us the key to the garage to park a couple of times when the lot was full, at no extra charge when normally there is daily rate for its use. We didn't use them because we didn't ski, but we were given 2 free lift tickets & I thought that was a nice perk.

My husband and I just spent two nights here in late October 2011. It was low season on a Monday and Tuesday night so the hotel was particularly quiet. Delicious breakfast and nice rooms, but the best part was the view of the mountains from our balcony.

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain view!
