Location is good but this is the only hotel I stayed in in China at this price level without internet. The breakfast included in the price was just ok with little to appeal to Western breakfast tastes. My room had some insect problems, also unusual in China.

I booked my room on www.Ctrip.com and got a good price of 170 rmb per night. I spent 10 days at the hotel while visiting my girlfriends' family and there is much to like. I stayed in the "western rooms" and was pleased with the price for a queen size bed room with a western style commode and a low-medium-high heating and I believe air conditioning, which included free breakfast for 2, and free high speed internet (not wi-fi), and a large remote television with 55+ channels, including one in English. Additionally, the staff is helpful, and the location is good, maybe a 5-10 minute walk to the night market and lots of shopping.

On the downside, the carpets are filthy, something on par with a Knights Inn, or a Motel 6 just before a renovation. The walls are covered in scuffs and have burn marks from the light bulbs. The sheets are clean, but also have stains on them and the bathroom has a persistent strong odor. The shower does not get hot, but after 5-10 minutes will get warm. However, what I dislike most about this hotel is the beds. They are literally harder than the carpeted floor. After several nights I have pain in my hip from laying on my side. However, this is the norm in China, and may be hard to avoid. Perhaps, the nicest hotels in KaiFeng have a softer bed, but because Chinese prefer a brick hard bed they may not.

The review sounds pretty bad, and the hotel is not very nice. But this is a nice but insignificant city in China void of western hotels. If I was in the United States I would not accept this in a hotel. But I am in China and compared to the other options for the money I will probably stay at this hotel again. For 3 times more money there are a couple nicer hotels in KaiFeng that are probably at the standards of a Holiday Inn Express in the US in terms of cleanliness and luxury. But for me this hotel represents a good value.

When in China, after staying in modern box-like hotels, it is a pleasant change to stay in a hotel built in the old style. A disadvantage of that style was no elevators, but only 3 levels. Good location, decent Chinese breakfast.

We booked this hotel via CTrip.com (excellent Chinese online agency) and it was very well priced – about 300RMB per night. For an extra 30RMB, we got their “Executive Suite” which raised some expectations but overall contributed to the disappointment of this property.

The location of this hotel is excellent, right beside the famous night market (really, the only reason to come to Kaifeng as a tourist) but it is a disappointment and what can be described in UK-English as a bit “minging”. There are some very grand gates to the property which is enclosed in some walls with a nice fountain. Whilst I don’t think this is an original feature, it is built in a traditional Chinese courtyard style which gave a first good impression.

The room itself was a disappointment. It was very poorly maintained with soiled carpets; paint missing on the walls; the bathroom door didn’t even close because the frame was completely warped; the tv hardly worked and the lighting was quite poor. The toilet was very weak and clogged very easily the windows were quite flimsy which was a concern as we were on the ground floor. We also received phone calls for ‘massages’ in the evening which is something the guidebooks warn you about but was the first time it happened out of a combined 1 month and 20 hotels of touring in China. I guess this speaks to the professionalism of the hotel staff as they must have tipped off their ‘friends’ that the room was occupied by two guys.

The receptionists had virtually no English skills and were incompetent when it came to accepting payment by credit card. The Chinese practice of ‘blocking’ deposits on your credit card upon arriving and then ‘canceling’ these payments on check out is often quite worrying but seems to be common practice in China and we have yet to have any rogue charges on our credit cards. This seemed to be quite a complex situation for the staff.

The breakfast which was included was horrible and were all leftovers from the previous night, served buffet style on prison like metal trays. However above the hotel was a coffee place which appeared to be part of the Chinese UBC coffee chain which served some excellent but expensive coffee. There is also an internet place right beside the guest house which was very convenient and cheap.

I would definitely seek another property if I went to Kaifeng again.
