“Don't go in the afternoon”

Millennium City Park
Ranked #1 of 43 things to do in Kaifeng

I don't mind these amusement/history parks as long as they're either entertaining or educational. This was neither. There are a bunch of imitation palaces and bridges and other structures that are none too impressive. There's a Kaifeng food market which pales in comparison to the real one in downtown Kaifeng. There were two shows in the afternoon, one concerning acrobatics and the other concerning wrestling, both of which were slapdash. I tried to find an exhibit about the Kaifeng Jews but the vendors said it moved to the front of the park and no one knew its new location.

The price tag for the park was 80 rmb which is not much in the States but is a lot in China. I expected a little more value for that expense.

We bought combined tickets to Millenium Park and its evening show. The park itself is pretty ordinary in my view, A rather thin copy of various Chinese historical standards, What was good however was the evening show. The show is played out over an artificial lake against a backdrop of palaces and forts and is a re-enactment of some slice of Chinese history. The show includes a huge number of performers, horses, boats, dramatic music and lighting etc. Whilst not necessarily being highbrow, it was great entertainment. In my view and that of my 5 well educated companions, it was better than the Tang dynasty show in Xi'an and better than the evening show at Shaolin. Because this is a rating for Millenium park, I have had to give it 4 out of 5 but for just the show, 5 out of 5.
