It was my first stay at Swissotel anywhere. Check-in was very smooth and Staff very polite with excellent English. Yes, one has to change elevators to get to the guest rooms but... this is very common in Chinese hotels where lower levels are often either residential or office floors. What you get is very nice sized room and fantastic view of Foshan (OK, when the pollution allows). I am always picky as far as room cleanliness. In many hotels they do a superficial cleaning. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of my room during my several nights stay. What is more important, there was none of the usual morning noise in the corridor when housekeeping lets everyone know that they are working. They did go about their business very quietly.
Food is usually so so in hotels. Swissotel bucks this trend. It starts with their excellent breakfast. I mean, every decent hotel will serve a selection of Chinese and Western dishes. That is nothing out of ordinary. What is out of ordinary is the quality they let you have. Quality of food items is excellent (imported as well as domestically sourced) and that is not really common to find as many hotels do source for cheaper alternatives. I actually tried their Italian Restaurant and the Bar - both with excellent views, oh, about the Bar, I was actually offered European beer on tap! What a surprise!
Now, how to get to this hotel from the nearest airport is another story. The easiest is a taxi but it will set you back about RMB 250 (so, RMB 500 both ways - nothing if your Company reimburses but a good sized pinch if you are on vacations). Another alternative is to take a Shuttle bus from the airport. Simply show them hotel's name and address & they will give you a ticket with bus number on it. You do not have to worry where to get out, as you go to the end of the route. Now, catching a taxi (about RMB 22, metered) from there may be another story as all you see are unlicensed "taxis" and legal ones that want to go without a meter and ask for RMB 50 or even 100. So, be pre-warned. I found the best alternative is to take a Metro from the airport. Yes, you will have to change the trains but it is a real "no brainier" (they have a very simple map in every car that tells you where to change trains to get to your destination). All you need to remember is that you want to end up on Line 1 and get out at Huangpi Road(s) Station. Then head to Exit 3, turn slightly right, cross the road and the tallest building you see some 150 meters down the road is the Swissotel.
Now, sure as heck the hotel can post these directions on their website. Almost all other hotels in the world do. Why not Swissotel? They also should post the hotel's name and full address in Chinese as none of the taxi drivers had a foggiest clue where Swissotel is and every time I ended up calling the hotel directly to explain to driver in Chinese where to get me (and yes, the person who answers the call will not talk to the driver but connect you to front desk - another nervous 30 sec when everyone around you honks at your taxi).
