“Corvette Caravan in the Rain”
Review of Tail of the Dragon

Tail of the Dragon
Reviewed May 4, 2013

What a shame we 26 Corvettes had to traverse the Dragon in the rain! It was the only day we could do the drive, but we pretty much had the road to ourselves - no motorcycles and more THP vehicles than any others! Even in the wet weather with lots of puddles/standing water it is an amazing 11 miles! We want to drive it again in the sunshine without having to worry about the landslide on TN129. The scenery is amazing, even in the rain! Common Sense must reign on the Dragon.

One of my favourite challenging drives. However there are many foolish people riding
Motorcycles trying to prove their skills. They drive so close, you get stressed while taking on what would be some awesome curves and switchbacks. Just pull over when you see them coming, they tend to get irritated with you. They are being photographed to prove how cool they are, while not caring about others.
Despite all this, I still love the drive - just don't try it if you are a nervous driver.

The Tail of the Dragon is a popular motorcycle ride but there are other rides that are more challenging and fun to ride.

The Dragon's claim to fame is 318 curves in 11 miles. The ride is challenging but probably more from staying away from other bikes, cars & trucks coming into your lane more than anything else. It is actually quite dangerous from that perspective. It's a ride that you should do twice - once in each direction. I probably would recommend staying away on the weekends. We were there on a week day and there were ago lot of bikes - cant even imagine the crowd on a Saturday. There was an accident while we were there which puts a damper in having fun.... Don't like to see anyone crash on their bike.

If you really want a more technically challenging ride try the Devils Triangle. It's a nasty ride with sharp hairpin curves with elevation changes, no shoulder, steep drop offs and wild truckers to make it a little more challenging.

Excellently rides that are enjoyable and with great curves - Cherohala Skyway and Moonshiner 28. Just as much fun with less on-coming traffic.

We like the area so much we bought a place there. It is not just for motorcycles, the area around the dragon provides some of the most beautiful scenery in the USA. Route 129 from the Dragon to Robbinsville is very soothing as you travel along the stream that you can hear and watch the fish. THe water is so very clear. It's a must!!!

We rented a Harley and rode the "Tail of the Dragon" There are too many sport cars trying to see who can make it in the fastest time. We nearly got run over once. The sights are beautiful, but you are too busy keeping focused on not getting killed to enjoy it. I don't care to ever do it again.
