“Better Then Ever!”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

This is our favorite place to relax and recharge. We love the serenity the Snowbird Lodge offers the soul. The grounds are always groomed to perfection, the lodge staff are always warm and inviting. Just when we thought it could not get better--it did! The improvements that Robert made to the screen room, fire pit, new deck, are a great addition and it gives guests even more places to relax. The food was outstanding as always and we look forward to enjoying the fresh eggs from the new chickens and fresh garden veggies when we visit again. A hike to Sunrise point is always a can't miss to-do for the amazing views. Thank you April for always treating us like family. Robert Thank you for sharing your love of Snowbird with us.

My wife and I just returned from a wonderful weekend at Snowbird. We arrived on Friday for a fantastic dinner in the restaurant and awoke Saturday morning to a beautiful day. After a great day of bike riding and hiking we sat down to the focus of the weekend-the Saturday night wine dinner.

Snowbird regulars and newer guests (like us) filled up the small dining room and enjoyed a specially made five course dinner that paired with the six different wines from Burgundy. If you have never been to a wine dinner at Snowbird I highly recommend it as it is surely a joy if you enjoy fine wine and food and great conversation with guests at your table.

The food and wine were tremendous but the thing that stood out to me was the "community" that the owners have developed over the many years they have owned the place. It's common to see long-time staff members greet long-time guests with hugs. They literally know each other. I don't fall in that category (yet) but it was great to see. And the staff even treats newbies like me and my wife like good friends. It's a very unusual but completely enjoyable experience!

For a weekend away from it all in the beauty of the NC Smoky Mountains, I cannot recommend the Snowbird Mountain Lodge highly enough!

Room Tip: Nicest rooms are in the Chestnut Lodge-a little more expensive but worth it.

Chose the lodge because it was near Joyce Kilmer Forest. Found the lodge to be so beautiful and restful that we didn't want to leave and visit sites. Screen porch with fire pit and trails on property definitely homeruns. Loved the privacy, size, and views of our Silverbell room.

This is the first review I've ever written--but I was motivated to write a review because I just had the best weekend ever at Snowbird Lodge. I was there with my husband to celebrate my 50th birthday. Snowbird was perfect. We borrowed a two-person kayak from the Lodge and had an amazing time meandering around the river watching the sunlight dance on the water, saw an otter, and saw almost no other people. It was perfect. We also ran in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and enjoyed soaking in our private hot tub with the most amazing view of the mountains and reading outside in a comfortable chair with a mountain view. We enjoyed one of Snowbird's special wine dinners and had some wonderful French wines that were grown in small family vineyards and were paired with an excellent 5-course French dinner. Breakfasts were also excellent--I particularly enjoyed the oatmeal and the eggs Benedict. The weather was beautiful, the staff were very friendly, and we enjoyed the perfect combination of private time for the two of us and social interaction with other guests. This is a truly special and amazing place -- quiet and beautiful, friendly, great food, great staff. Perfect. We will return.

Room Tip: Highly recommend the Chestnut Lodge rooms because they have hot tubs with the most amazing mountain...

My wife and I along with our best friends just spent Valentine's weekend at Snowbird. The mountains were snow-covered and exceptionally beautiful. We were not able to take our usual route across the Cherohala Skyway due to the heavy snow up top, so we took the Tail of the Dragon instead, following a snowplow for part of the way until it turned around. We thus had most of the Dragon to ourselves on snow and ice-covered pavement, kind of like driving up the bobsled run at the Olympics. If you like mountain driving, either of these roads is a world-class experience.
The lodge was as beautiful as ever, having just reopened after their winter break, and the staff was friendly and accommodating across the board. The food was excellent, with a variety of choices. The bar, added a few years ago, is most inviting and offers one of the finest selections of whiskeys you will find anywhere. The 3 fireplaces in the lodge were blazing away and provided the perfect atmosphere for relaxing during the day and after dinner. We enjoyed talking with Robert, the owner, who we first met during our first stay at Snowbird in June, 1997. We have returned many times, with friends, with family, and just ourselves. We have been there in winter, spring, summer, and fall. All visits have been great. We like staying in the lodge rooms if we are there by ourselves or with friends. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. There are some rooms in separate buildings with individual amenities including hot-tubs which we prefer if we have family with us; all of these rooms are just a short walk from the main building.
There are all kinds of trails in the area for hiking, although this trip we could not go up top for the open vistas, instead staying in the Joyce Kilmer forest and driving over to the Twentymile loop trail on the south edge of Smokey Mountains National Park. The latter is loaded with spectacular cascading streams, which for our hike were flowing briskly due to the snow. On Valentines day we were pleasantly surprised to find a rose, chocolates and book waiting for us in our room when we returned from our hike.
Snowbird offers an exceptional experience for what we feel are quite reasonable prices considering all that you receive and have at your disposal. On the drive home (again over the Tail of the Dragon) we vowed to return next Valentine's weekend.

Room Tip: The corner rooms in the lodge are the roomiest.

My wife and I stayed here last fall and it was a wonderful experience. The scenery was breathtaking, the lodging facilities were top-notch and the food was outstanding. Located in a remote area of the Blue Ridge mountains where it is quiet and peaceful--what a wonderful place for a leisurely and relaxing vacation. If you stay here don't miss Joyce Kilmer Forest and the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway drives. Robert was a gracious host and made our stay very comfortable. The staff was very nice and helpful. One of the great resorts in the Southeastern U.S.

It is an experience unto itself. If the weather is good, take the Cherohala Skyway right to the lodge. It will get you in the mood. We arrived last Wed. afternoon before thanksgiving cold, harried and scared, having driven that way thru snow and ice in a minivan without 4 wheel drive. The staff and guests couldn't have been more sympathetic and helpful. And calmed us right down. (had I had mobile phone service on the mountain, I'd have ordered a large pitcher of manhattans in our room.
My 93 yr. old mommy accompanied us, and Shelley lit her fire place, made her comfortable and even brought supper to her.

Thanksgiving is a not to be missed feast...did I say an all day feast? It was lovely. Three meals a day are provided inducing a sack lunch for hiking the many beautiful trails in the Joyce Kilmer forest and exploring out of the way places. and Thanksgiving supper was a sandwich buffet. Breakfast consists of the usual fare...on day it was lemon ricotta pancakes. Absolutely delicious, and I'm not a pancake fan. Being in the mountains, their trout is real good too.

We rented the Oak and Poplar cottages which come quipped with jacuzzi, fire place, steam shower,,hot tup and a wonderful deck from which to meditate on the mountains and valleys.

WE plan another trip in the spring....oh, the main lodge serves coffee and cookies all day long, The great room has a real fireplace, lots of comfortable seating, and walls lined with books. And you don't have to dress up for the dining room. Butch sure makes a mean cocktail!

Room Tip: We loved the cottages in Chestnut Lodge.
