Snowbird Mountain Lodge
Ranked #1 of 12 Robbinsville B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 19, 2011

Snowbird Mountain Lodge has a rustic look but has most of the amenities of a full-scale resort. We stayed in the Chestnut Lodge building which has large, upscale rooms featuring a fireplace, a private outdoor deck with hot tub, comfortable chairs and sofa, wet bar, CD player and small refrigerator. Keep in mind that there are no TVs or phones in the rooms. Cell phone service is pretty good, though. Wi-fi is in the main building only; the inn has one desktop computer to use.

Food is very good to excellent. Breakfast features a daily special such as banana pancakes and breakfast quesadilla. Lunch is a sandwich, cookie, fruit and drink packed for sightseers and hikers. Dinner features four choices--steak, trout, chicken/pasta and something different, such as pork loin or shrimp and grits. Desserts are all delicious, especially the cobblers.

Pets and children under 12 are not allowed. Clientele on our visit was mostly affluent retirees who favor shorts and t-shirt; at dinner they wear shorts and a nicer shirt--definitely not a dress-up place. Don't expect a lot of activity--it's mostly hiking, walking and admiring nature. The lobby/library has 100s of books and is a comfortable place for reading and relaxing.

Mountain views are spectacular, probably the best in NC, including the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest (giant hemlocks and poplars) and the Cherohala scenic skyway.
Staff is small--most of them seem to have more than one job--but they are pleasant and helpful.
Recommended for a scenic, classy and serene getaway.

Room Tip: Chestnut Lodge is worth the extra money

We last stayed at Snowbird 15 years ago, but decided to try it again as a mini-vacation from our home in Asheville, North Carolina. It did not disappoint. We began by getting massages -- first class by Dave who came over from the John C. Campbell Folk School. Neither of us is physically able to do strenuous hikes, but we were able to get a good taste of the splendid Joyce Kilmer National Forest on the first day. We ate our Lodge-prepared picnic lunch on a log on one of the trails there. The only down side was seeing all of the dead hemlock trees -- casualties of the imported wooly adelgid insect.

The next day we drove over the scenic highway into Tennessee, pausing long enough to hike the short distance up to Hooker's Bald -- well worth it. Like one other reviewer, we were turned off by some motorcyclists who seem loathe to use mufflers. We don't mind the muffled kind.

We enjoyed evenings on the porch, or better yet (because if's more private) on the small deck adjoining the parking lot. The moon, beautiful clouds, lightning bugs, and yes bats contributed to our pleasure. All this and gourmet food too!

Only one minor complaint. At a rustic lodge, we don't expect soundproof rooms. But with the lodge only about half full couldn't they have left the room above us vacant? Believe me, we could hear everything and are sure all of our everythings could be heard, too.

In short, go there. It's great.

Our first visit to Snowbird, hopefully the first of many. The inn is rustic and quaint. We stayed in the main lodge, 2nd floor corner room. No TV and No phones....perfectly quiet!
The main lodge lobby is perfectly furnished and decorated. Game tables, books, and a large window with a magnificent mountaintop view. There is a large rocking chair lined deck and a, not to be missed, swing on the side porch. All meals are included and are scrumptiously delicious, this includes your "picnic" lunch for each day of your stay & your trip home. The wine list is very expansive....a choice for everyone! On our stay, the bar was featuring an "inn-made" lemon-ginger vodka....yummy!! The staff gave very personal service w/ a smile and a hint of laughter. Most of all the atmosphere instantly puts you in a relaxed and stress free mood! This is a destination you will not want to miss. Lake Santeetlah is nearby and offers quiet boating activities; and there are short and long hiking trails all around. One other tip, you have to experience Snowbird in person!! You will not regret it!!

This is a very gracious inn-sumptuous views and spaces. We stayed in Wolfe Cabin 2,
which will always be our first request. Not fancy, but very comfy, nice bath, front porch with best view, and small and private screened porch with pristine little hot tub--seemed brand new. Meals were very good-though not exceptional. Service was perfect--all needs attended to but no "hovering" Town was dreary-and restaurants very scarce--part of Snowbird's MAP appeal! Nearby Nantahala, Lake Santeetla ,the Joyce Kilmer National Forest and Lake Fontana and it;s dam are nice components to a visit. One drawback--the area is a haven for motorcyclists and noise became an unwelcome distraction at times. On balance, very recommendable!

This is our second visit to Snowbird and it surpassed the first.. We had one of the large rooms in the Chestnut Lodge, Silverbell, a very short walk to main Lodge. The room was spacious, very private, with gorgeous views from the private deck and hot tub for two. Nearby short hiking trails lead to even better vistas of the area.
The food is fantastic, with different Mountain Trout dishes every night if you want, and beef, chicken and vegetarian if you so desire. The main lodge great room is fascinating in its decor. It beacons you to plop down in one of the large chairs for a few moments of relaxation. The kitchen packs lunches to take with you whatever adventures you want to pursue during the day, whether it be hiking, kayaking, canoeing, or driving the magnificent roads nearby, including the Cherohala Skyway, which surpasses the Blue Ridge Parkway for its views, although much shorter in length, and the Tail of the Dragon, a world reknowned twisty road for those who like sportscars and curves.
The innkeeper, Robert, takes great pride in his Lodge and ensures each guest has a memorable experience.

Room Tip: The main lodge rooms are basic, but nice. The rooms in the newer buildings are more to my liking whe...

The Snowbird is a wonderful place to experience the mountains. The Lodge is warm and cozy, the views are beautiful, the food is fantastic. The staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is so peaceful and quiet. You can canoe on the nearby lake and there are lots of nice hikes in the area. Don't miss the view from the sunrise deck even if you have to get up very early! We love The Snowbird and will be back many more times. It has become our special place to get away!
