This is a beautiful state park. They have a variety of short hikes with very nice scenery. My husband and I took the Cedar Creek trail. You hike along a small creek through a forest of mountain laurel and pines. This would be absolutely beautiful hike when the mountain laurel is in bloom! The trail goes passed the an old homestead from 1855 which you can tour. The park staff member is very knowledgeable about the history and up keep of the property. It also offers a great view of Stone Mountain. There are also several other trails which take you to various waterfalls in the park. The trails are well maintained and well marked. The parks offers picnic areas, camping, remote back packing and easy day hikes.

Although I've lived in North Carolina for years, I had never even heard of Stone Mountain State Park. We went on a whim and it turned out be a great day out. The waterfall is the most impressive I've seen in NC. What sets it apart is that stone it flows over is almost perfectly smooth so you get a great sense of pure, unobstructed power and flow. Standing at the edge gives a lovely, if vertiginous view of the mountains beyond. From there the trail follows the creek through beautiful forest for a good distance before leveling out in an open plain. At first you think you've reached a fairly dull section of trail, until you turn around and see the mountain rising behind you out of nowhere like it was just dropped into the meadow from outer space. There are lots of fun boulders to scramble over just at the base of the mountain. From here it's a reasonably strenuous slog to the summit, and the view, although beautiful, is not more impressive than other mountains in the area. If you are less physically fit you could not be blamed for skipping the summit itself. But the waterfall and hike to the meadow are unique experiences well worth the trip. We saw few other hikers out, so clearly word has not gotten out about this lovely and surprising hike. Perhaps we benefited from the amount of rain we've received this summer. Maybe the falls are less impressive in a dry year. All I know is that they were great when we were there. If you're reading this, and there's not a drought going on, I strongly encourage you to check out Stone Mountain, NC.

GF and I had a wonderful time at this great state park. We arrived at noon and took a campsite based on the Park Ranger's recommendation. She was spot on! Following a quick lunch we hiked several trails including up to the waterfall. It was breathtaking. Too bad the afternoon was cut short by several heavy rains.

The campsite was laid out nicely and obviously maintained on a regular basis as evidenced by the well-cared for table on the site. Potable water was within sight of the campsite.. The toilet and shower facilities, both male and female, were extremely clean.

SMTP is worth a repeat visit.
