“Nice B & B is great historical location with easy downtown access”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

We recently stayed for 2 nights at the Oakwood Inn Bed and Breakfast in Raleigh NC and found our experience there quite enjoyable. We stayed in the Polk room which was a large quiet room on the ground floor that was quite private. The room was lovely and had a nice gas fireplace to add a touch of warmth and romance! The private bath was large with a shower over an old clawfoot tub, which was nice for a good soak. There was a large fountain outside our window which we would have enjoyed had it been turned on (still a bit too cool, I guess.) Both breakfasts were good and kept us going all morning as we toured the city. The historic Oakwood area is ideal to walk to downtown, or just to enjoy all the historic homes in the area. There is a huge cemetery nearby which is neat to walk through. Lots of old civil war graves and interesting tombstones. It's only about a 20 minute walk to the Executive Mansion, the Capitol, or several great museums downtown. The Oakwood B and B is ideally situated to take advantage of all these activities. By the way, DO NOT MISS the 42nd St. Oyster Bar--it's just the coolest place for oysters and seafood, and only about a mile from the Inn!

Room Tip: If you want privacy and a large room with a convenient first floor location, the Polk Room is a nice...

Oakwood Inn is a great location. Very close to downtown Raleigh so you can park your car for a while. The Oakwood area has lots of cool old homes and lots of historic properties. Downtown Raleigh is a nice area to see. The one not to miss is a tour of the Executive Mansion which you need to schedule in advance. The Museum of History is good and most all museums are free.
The Inn services a nice breakfast and the room on the first floor is roomy and fairly quiet. My only disappointment was the noisy dogs which bark at most everyone who goes in and out. Since the front door locks automatically intruders are hardly a problem so I dont understand why you would want such loud and barking dogs. Otherwise it is a nice place.

Room Tip: The first floor room has its own private porch area.

Have stayed at the Oakwood Inn once a year for the last several years, and have always had a great stay! The beautiful antique furnishings of the inn & the historic area homes always make us feel like we've stepped back in time! The innkeepers are always welcoming & happy to recommend restaurants & activities in the area. So much within walking distance as well. I must say that although I didn't detect any "smelly dogs", I took great delight in the aroma of fresh brewed coffee & frying bacon in the morning! Not to mention the fabulous homebaked cookies in the evening. YUM!! The only downside to our visit this time was hearing that a prior guest had given a less than stellar revue for "mediocre service" during her stay, and I feel that I have to comment on that. The morning of the day she arrived, or I should say the late evening, the innkeepers father who lived with them, had passed away, and although Gary had enough on his plate to deal with that situation, stayed up late to make sure she got checked in properly. He & his daughter flew up to Michigan the following day to arrange things, and Doris following a day later. Due to the situation, had others filling in to care for their guests in their absence. Being in the hospitality business myself, I understand that they would not mention this to their guests. I believe that given the circumstance, they still deserve a 5 star rating! At any rate - we will be back again & again for the ambiance & hospitality!

How very happy I was to discover the Oakwood during a recent business visit -- a welcome respite from the standardization of less than exciting hotels! The hosts cld not have been more welcoming. We were most appreciative of their prompt action to move us to an upgraded back-facing room room when an unexpected water main break on the street in front left crews working late. The bedrooms with modern baths, are beautifully appointed with antiques and the gas fireplaces in each, a rare treat! The Inn is within easy walking distance to town, and the many surrounding streets of heritage homes make this a terrific destination for those who appreciate architectural treasures from Raleigh's past!

Came to town for business and really appreciated the wonderful hospitality of Gary and Doris. The house was beautiful and really made you feel like you had walked into another place and time. Especially enjoyed relaxing by the fireplace in my room after a long day of work. A wonderful location with a short walk to the downtown area where we got to enjoy free museums and amazing pubs and restaurants. I would highly recommend a stay at he Oakwood Inn to anyone going to the Raleigh area.

Stayed during the Historic Oakwood Candlelight Tour and had veryenjoyable time!
Gary and Doris are wonderful hosts, the food was excellent and the neighboorhood is beautiful.
Our room was romantic, the porch out front is a great place to watch the world go by and you can't find nicer people than those in Raliegh, NC.

We will definately go back!

Room Tip: All the rooms are terrific - though the bathroom in the back first floor is - WOW!

We have stayed at the Oakwood Inn 5-6 times in the past years when we have visited Raleigh, the most recent stay was after Christmas 2012, and have always had a very enjoyable time there. The rooms are always immaculate and each one has it's own particular charm. The breakfasts there are always delicious as well as filling. The owners there are always eager to supply information on the sites to see and where the best places to eat are. If you can catch them when they are not attending to the needs of their guests, they are wonderful people to talk to, and we have, on more than one occasion, enjoyed their company on the front porch watching the beautiful sunset.
