If one is a fan of burger, fires and shakes. Cook Out is your place. Burgers are real meat - minimum filler. Shakes are milk from aq cow, not a bean. Fried are crisp and of a very good texture.

2 of 3 stars (good, fast food).

(see explanation of ratings below)

I never order burgers here anymore. On three separate occasions, I got burgers with bits of bone (or something hard) in them, so never again. I do like their other sandwiches and love their shakes.

You absolutely cannot beat their "combo" deal (which they call a "tray"): a sandwich, dog or chicken strips, 2 sides and a drink or float ALL for just $4.25. Best combo deal anywhere.

Otherwise, figure about $5-$7 per person

About my ratings:

Only fine dining establishments can garner five stars. Until TripAdvisor realizes that a fast food joint cannot possibly be ranked equally with a $100 per person place, I need to draw the line somewhere. If we were only talking about the quality and presentation of the food, it would be a different story. But, as we know, TripAdvisor's rankings take into account the entire dining experience.

Therefore, I divide restaurants into three categories (and I wish TripAdvisor would do the same):

1) fast food and "fast-casual" (no table service )

2) casual and "posh casual" dining (table service)

3) fine dining (linen napkins, no plastic cups, no TV's in dining room, typically more expensive than casual dining)

Fine dining can earn a max of five stars. Casual dining can earn a max of four stars. Fast food can earn a max of three stars.

We go to the Cook Out on Falls of Neuse Rd. Have always had very fresh, hot food and the milkshakes are some of the best! Our kids like the burgers and Mom and Dad like the bbq sandwich.

Dozens of different flavors of shakes, they're addicting! Pecan pie has chunks of crust and pecans, watermelon is vanilla ice cream with chunks of watermelon... You get the idea.

The double drive thru concept is perfected in this regional favorite. The most amazing thing is the milkshake - you have a choice of flavors that runs from the basic - chocolate, strawberry, vanilla - to the texture-y goodness of cherry cobbler, chocolate chip mint, and Hi C Fruit Punch (I am NOT kidding, and you gotta try this flavor!). And more amazing than the menu of flavors is the fact that you can order the shake, pull up to the window, and in 15-20 seconds, you have your shake!

The prices can't be beat, either. Try the cheeseburger combo or the barbecue sandwich combo - drink and two sides included - for under $5! Atlanta has The Varsity, SoCal has the In-and-Out Burger, but when you have visitors from out of town, make sure you take them to The Cook Out.
