“Charming”
Reviewed January 29, 2010

We stopped in for lunch while passing through Raleigh. So glad we did, the restaurant is delightful. The service is wonderful, food delicious and particulary enjoyed the small details put into the serving pieces and the crisp white table clothes. This is a casual eatery with style. If you're in the area its well worth the visit.

“Great sandwiches, but...”
Reviewed January 15, 2010

We have been here many times and the food has been good each time, but recently we experienced numerous fruit flies/nats at the table throughout the meal. It was very unpleasant. Not sure I want to risk going here again.

“Great lunch destination away from the bustle”
Reviewed July 7, 2009

I have been here many times and never been disappointed. They have a great selection of homemade sandwiches on many different kinds of bread and excellent homemade desserts. The owner is always there serving and helping. It's inexpensive - cash and check only though! Very good.

“Definitely go here for the charm if you have time, lots of it”
Reviewed February 18, 2008

The Side Street is the only restaurant in the historic Oakwood neighborhood. Residents of the area walk down to this place on the weekend and after work. Raleigh does not have a very large historical area, so this is a chance to experience it, and to take a stroll on the quaint surrounding streets where the buildings have been renovated by caring locals. The owners of the Side Street have made the front room wonderful. It is delightful to sit there and look at the pictures on the walls and out the large windows. The menu is limited to sandwiches, salads, and a few specials, but the selection of these things, and desserts, is extensive. At dinner sandwiches are served as well. The homemade desserts and ambiance are worth a special trip for "high tea." I do not know where else to get such tasty salad. You will need to take your time, because the waitress was hired as a friend of the owners, not because of her service skills. She is very nice, as are the owners, but this is not a rushed place. I never try to go on my work lunch hour. Keep in mind that the slowness is part of the charm. The restaurant is supposed ot be closed Wednesday evenings and Sundays, although I have found it closed unexpectedly with no note in the window on Saturday early evenings. By the way, men seem to like this place as much as women do, but portions vary. If you have a big appetite you may wish to ask what is best to order.
