I've been eating at Seaboard Cafe since the long-gone days when they served Saturday and Sunday breakfast (still much-missed). Seaboard is located in the old coffee shop of Raleigh's former Seaboard Air Line Railroad station, now a garden center and plant nursery. Under Rick's leadership Seaboard Cafe delivers consistently delicious food - every time - and has done so for more than 20 years. The indoor-outdoor dining space is casually pleasant and the view of the plants and the railroad traffic in the adjoining railyard is an added bonus.
Rick does a good job balancing old favorites (mine is the bacon swiss burger) with new twists and options. Once you meet him, you're assured of a friendly greeting forever. Seaboard is truly first rate casual dining in a unique setting.

I work downtown and this is my favorite lunch getaway.... my fav is the "Grilled Tuna Salad, Swiss & Cranberries sandwich." Menu items come with a side, all created from scratch. Their burgers are juicy, sandwiches all unique, they serve homemade soup and every menu item they make their own... this place is a favorite among locals.... if you love plants and gardening you"ll want to browse. The owner loves making his customers happy. Try their special crabcake sandwich on Fridays!

Reasonably priced casual lunch. Excellent pastas/sandwich/burger specials. It's located in a former railroad station turned garden center. The trains still occasionally rumble by.

Great little gem that most out-of-towners would not know about, so I must tell you! Seabord Cafe is located on the same property as Logan's plant nursery, in the vicinity of downtown Raleigh. The Cafe occupies what used to be the original restuarant in the old Seaboard Train Station. The plant nursery (which is wonderful--plan to look around) occupies what was once the train platforms and main waiting areas of the old station. Seaboard serves a base menu of specialty sandwiches, salads, grill items and soups, with daily specials, including crab cakes every Friday. The food, though casual and quick, is superb. Every item seems to have a small twist that make it unique to Seaboard, and all are delicious. Service is friendly and personable. Leave your order at the counter, and wait staff bring it out to your table, bring drink refills, and clear. Sit "indoors" (a heated area closed in with non-permanent, see through walls), or outside surrounded by beautiful plants. Can be warm on summer days, or cold on very cold days, but with heat and ceiling fans, as well as shaded and sunnier areas, it is comfortable most of the time. Great place for small kids, who will appreciate being able to move and make a bit of noise. Popular restuarant with downtown workers, so is often crowded at lunch time. Have no fear, they serve quickly, so even a long line goes fast. Any dress is acceptable, assuming you have on clothes! Examples of menu items are: soup and a muffin, chili and a muffin, burgers, grilled sandwiches, pasa salad, green salads etc. (My favorite-grilled tuna salad with cranberry--sounds weird, but is excellent). Everything homemade here, and you can tell. FYI, if you are a plant-lover, this is a must, as Logan's nursery is a gardener's delight. What more could you want--great food, lovely setting, friendly service for not a lot of money.
