“Not close to what it's trying to be”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We took a chance and it was okay at best. There's really no compelling reason to go back. First, there was no valet. I can park my own car but it's downtown and it was freezing out. This was my first clue we might have made a mistake. What decent restaurant downtown doesn't have valet parking available? I'd gladly pay. The wine list is eh. We ordered glasses. It took almost 10 minutes for them to "make" our drinks. The menu is interesting but the waiter made no recommendations, offered no helpful insight. We ordered the ribs and the shrimps and grits first. Ribs were overdone, chewy and just slathered in super sweet sauce - not good. The shrimp and grits (polenta cake) was okay. Then we had veal ravioli - which made me realize why they decided to put salt and pepper shakers on the table. (Honestly cannot remember last time I was at an upscale restaurant that put salt and pepper shakers on the table - this was also a worrisome clue when we sat down.) The ravioli was flavorless. The pork belly skewers were next - so so and a literal repeat of the flavor profile of the ribs. I think they used the exact same sauce and the skewers were fancy toothpicks. Come on, where's the creativity. The fish tacos were the best thing we ordered. Actually quite tasty. Last we had the jerk chicken flatbread - okay but i'm sure you can get just as good a flatbread at CPK. On the service side again, we had to ask for clean plates a couple times along the way. The dishes slathered in bbq sauce made a mess but they seemed fine having us continue with the same dirty plates throughout an entire tapas style meal. All in all, this place is decorated as upscale modern and trying to be chic but the food and service don't come close to measuring up. Too bad.

“Surprisingly delicious”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

What a great hidden surprise! Located on a corner in Raleigh is a gem. The restaurant has two levels: a beautiful, contemporary downstairs bar plus tables for dinner and an upper level with dining tables and a really awesome fireplace detail located high on a wall. The staff is highly professional and the service is spotless. The menu is VERY accommodating to people with food issues. Plus, the staff goes out of their way to be sure that each dish is prepared so that the person who ordered it can enjoy it. Food is presented in very picturesque ways and is delicious. The three course dinner specials that we ordered were more than filling. We'll definitely be back.

“Everything was delicious”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

As a group of four we had a reservation for 8pm on a Sat night and were sat immediately upon arrival. We all started with cocktails, all great, highly suggest trying the Spicy Pisces. Throughout the evening we each ordered 2 dishes and shared. The truffle mac and cheese is a must, as well as the shrimp dumplings. We also had the egg rolls, hummus, butternut squash soup, green beans, fish tacos...all really yummy. The group agreed the fried chicken and green tomatoes were not as good as the other dishes, but not bad. Our waitress and food runner were really helpful, upbeat personalities, and we really liked the atmosphere. So glad to see a new place in Raleigh with something other than the typical southern flare menu offerings. Will definitely be returning soon. Will be a great place for a date too!

“A nice place to stop in after dinner.”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

8 of us stopped in for drinks after a nice dinner out. They have an appealing drink/dessert drinks/dinner list. The staff was great when we asked if the lights could be dimmed. Cheers!

“Please keep this place to yourself”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

If you're just visiting.. or in town for a conference - don't come here. Click on to the next review please. Nothing to see here, just move along.

For those of us who are in on the secret - its hard enough to get a table on weekends. The only opening was at 9:45pm. Or you will wet yourself sitting at the "Chef's bar table" watching Chris, the affable flavour meister craft another delicious platter of grilled octopus and cippollini onion.

Order 5-6 of those starters to share with your friends. That way you can cover the whole menu - everything is good. Try something different - like those juicy fried prawns. Don't complain about the chilli flakes in the green beans off the work - there is more heat in your typical NC barbecue. And yes, its ok to order a second portion of the pork belly skewers.

The wine list is quite reasonable and features a good non-US selection. Try the 2004 Rioja with its explosive Tempranillo temper somewhat mellowed by time. A great value at its price.

I'll be back with friends who can keep this amazing place a secret.
