“Yawn”

Acorn in Moore Square
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Completely unimpressive. It's just a giant metal acorn. Big deal. Don't waste your time seeing it. Go to Durham and visit Duke Chapel and Duke Gardens instead.

This is in Moores Square downtown and is not especially worth a special trip unless you just want a picture of the sculpture. Lots of homeless people around this area at certain times but it is a very safe area.

It's the giant acorn they drop on New Years Eve at Moore Square. Really not a whole lot going on except for the life that gathers at Moore Square. You can see it and be done in a few minutes including photo ops.

My son in law teases me about the fact that at First Night Raleigh, there is a nut suspended from a crane to be lowered for the little ones out on the plaza at 7PM and later for the New Year.
This "nut" is kept in Moore Square the entire year until it is taken to the artists studio and polished and placed in the Plaza for everyone to walk by it at the First Night festivities and place their hand on it for good luck. Sweet. Then it is raised and lowered at seven just like the Crystal Ball in NYC. Come join us!

Moore Square had potential, but then some churces started feeding the homeless here. Now it is over-run, and it's hard to relax without getting pestered.
