“Authentic Victorian neighborhood”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

You can learn a lot about life in Raleigh 100 years ago by strolling the lovely tree lined streets of Oakwood. There are over 400 homes in a 10 block area just behind the Executive Mansion. A walking tour brochure is available which describes the homes and their original owners. A neighborhood sandwich shop, Side Street Cafe, is a good place to begin or end your walking tour.

“nicely redone homes”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Old neighborhood that has many creative, artistic people living there that have done a great job in refurbishing fine, old houses and made them look really good. A Raleigh jewell.

“fine old homes”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

The homes a vintage 1930's to 1950's houses for the most part but have been brought up to date and refurbished by the home buyers. People that live in Oakwood are often creative and artistic.

“restored neighborhood of distinction”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

One of my friends lived here years ago and did housing rehabilitation. You can see the results from their work and many others. Famous cemetery; former site of the Henry Clay Oak, about 3 1/2 feet in diameter on an ordinary street *(taken down in 1980s? due to decay. Historic marker, still there, says Clay reportedly decided about running for President while in the shade of this old oak.

“Some beautiful homes”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

Some beautiful older homes but not truly an attraction unless it was organized as the one reviewer mentions with the Christmas Parade of Home or if there were a brochure with some history and some fact and figures.

It was a nice walk, just wish I had learned more.
