My husband and I went on this tour as part of our anniversary (since the first anniversary's theme is "paper," I got him tickets to a number of local events). We found the tour fun and informative--you will learn something about Raleigh's history, whether or not you believe in the paranormal.

The tour began at the Courthouse in downtown Raleigh, on Fayetteville, where we first learned about the Yarborough Hotel and its legendary ghosts. We moved next to the Capital Building, but along the way, we learned about the Briggs Hardware store. After visiting the Raleigh City Cemetery, we ended up at Moore Square. At each site, the guide, Anne, told us about paranormal activities that had been reported. We were impressed that she presented information drawn from archival research she has conducted--not just myths or embellished tales. We liked that the information was presented in an interesting manner, but without being over-the-top. For example, we learned the story behind the Briggs Hardware store, and how it was built with gold the owner had hidden, buried in a grove, to protect his savings from the Civil War, and that famous African American Civil Rights leader Anna Julia Cooper is buried in the Raleigh City Cemetery.

The best part was the cemetery, where we were given time to explore on our own, with flashlights, before hearing about its history. Be sure to bring a flashlight so you can check it out yourself!

Unfortunately, our final stop at Moore Square was disrupted when police arrived, informing us that the square was closed at dusk. The owner handled the matter professionally and we all dispersed--fortunately we had already heard about that piece of history before having to leave.

If you go, be sure to bring a flashlight, and bring whatever you will need with you (water, etc.). There are no designated bathroom breaks or facilities along the tour, so be prepared for that!

Whether you are visiting from out of town or a local Durhamite, this is a great idea for a night out and something different than the old dinner/movie. Great date idea or somthing to do with visitors. Good mix of history, ghost stories/lore (pretty tame), walking around the city, and meeting new people. Quite a lot of pub time, so probably not the best for little kids. Our tour guide Shawn was fantastic and so knowledgeable about the area. Lot of fun!!

We took our 9 and 11 year old girls with us for this ghost tour. It was billed as a family-friendly experience -- which we strongly agree that it was. My wife and I have been on other ghost tours in other cities -- and they were rather spooky would not have been suitable for young children. This was more of a history lesson with some very interesting facts and stories -- and not at all scary. If you want to be spooked, this one probably isn't for you -- although the walk through the cemetery at night in the misty rain was sort'a creepy. :) It was educational and fun -- and perfect for older kids to join in on.

My husband and I have been stopping in Durham on our way home from visiting family each summer for the last several years. This year we decided to try the Haunted Pub Crawl to see some new parts of Durham, visit some new bars, and learn a little more about the area. It was such a great idea! Shawn was a fantastic tour guide. We got to see new areas of Durham and learn all about the history of the city. It was fun to hear the haunted tales too :) If you're not really into the ghost and spooky stories thing, the historical side of the tour more than makes up for it. Being a part of a group made hanging out in the pubs a lot of fun. I loved starting out in the speak easy in such a cool part of town. We saw several really cool bars that were all unique. Have some appetizers at the stops was great too. There was definitely something for everyone! I think our group, now new friends, hung out at the last pub for quite a while after the tour was over. I would highly recommend this tour to visitors to the Durham area, and even locals. Other members of our group that are familiar with the area learned a lot of history too. Thanks for an awesome tour, Shawn! Looking forward to our next trip to Durham!
