Owner description: One of the leading art museums in the American South, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) recently completed a major, three-year expansion that places it in the front ranks of museums nationwide. The NCMA offers a permanent collection spanning more than 5,000 years, a variety of celebrated exhibitions and public programs, an amphitheater for outdoor performances, and the nation’s largest museum park—164 acres of trails and parkland containing major works of art.

This is a very creative art museum, with collections ranging from modern to medieval Judaica to you name it. Spacious and airy, fine eating on site at decent prices, good parking, very close to Wade Avenue (extension of I-40) on Blue Ridge Road.

One of the best Regional Museums anywhere. The permanent collection is a real treasure.. it is perfect for teaching someone Art History, or for just enjoying. The visiting collections are usually outstanding. This is one of only a few cases anywhere of a State Government doing something really well!

Allow yourself plenty of time to "soak it all in" as this place is quite large. They also have areas outside of the museum to sit, relax and eat.

Love the NC Museum of Art. The two buildings contains loads of art in multiple genres, and the new wing is an architectural pleasure to enjoy, complete with a variety of outdoor Rodin sculpture gardens to move in and out of the sun. The museum collection is "wired" to an extent with the ability to dial up numbers and hear experts talk about different art pieces. The museum shop is small and fairly limited, but there is a really nice cafe in the new wing. Museum memberships here are great, as you get into special exhibitions for free, and you get to see outdoor movies in the summer for free (and indoor movies in the winter). The museum has a great outdoor space with a huge movie screen mounted on their exterior wall next to a giant amphitheater with a great summer concert series. Something for everyone to be sure! Need I say more? Yes--the museum also has miles and miles of trails on its expansive campus dotted with sculpture for one to walk, jog, or bike, conveniently connected to the wider Raleigh network of bike trails. Whoever planned this facility and its programming did it right--keep up the great work!

Compared to museums like MoMA, NC Museum of Art is on a smaller scale. Don't worry! They have amazing permanent collections and amazing exhibitions going on.

As an art professional, I really enjoy spending time at the museum...either to do my research, joining in art lectures, art activities of just to enjoy the atmosphere. Besides, the museum is a beautiful place to take wedding photographs.
