Owner description: The State Capitol building, built in 1840, is an excellent example of a civic structure in Greek Revival-style architecture. Though recently renovated, the building does contain some original furniture.

We came, we saw, we enjoyed. Our original reason for coming was to enjoy a movie. The stroll we took through the area was quietly enjoyable.

We visited the North Carolina State Capitol building on a Saturday morning when a free guided tour is offered. While waiting for the tour to begin, we roamed the building on our own with the information provided. At the appointed time, we took the tour along with about ten girl scouts. Our guide was very informative, and it was worth the short wait.

The senate and house chambers are no longer used by the legislative bodies, so no modern updates are present in the rooms. In the rotunda, be sure to notice the statue of George Washington in Roman garb. We also enjoyed the state library room and the geologist office -- beautiful woodwork. On the grounds around the capitol building are many statues -- the best is one of presidents Jackson, Polk, and Johnson.

Staff members were wonderful and gave me a printed self-guided tour. (You can also have an audio tour for $5.) Since the legislators moved to a new building in the sixties, only the Governor and staff are in the building. You can view the Senate and House chambers, and the entire tour should take about 45 minutes. Highlights include the library and the outdoor statues.

The State Capitol building is an interesting place to learn some about NC political history and see the various rooms of the building as they were preserved.

Great doors for entry, beautiful display of US Armed Forces flags. Historical accounts of the history of North Carolina. Guard in the door swiftly asked me, "May I help you ma'am?" when I opened door.
