“Put on your hiking shoes, grab a bottle of water, and GO!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

This park is awesome! I've grown up in the area, but up until recently I hadn't visited this park. A friend suggested my wife and I go check it out, and it was well worth it. There are miles of trails, multiple parking areas, bathrooms, campgrounds, even a small lake! There are gravel trails, clay trails, hills, bridges, old mills, too much to see in one day! If you enjoy the outdoors, and/or have a pet that loves them too, this is a must. WARNING: during Spring and Fall weather, when hiking is prime, this place is packed. It can be hard to find parking, and you'll encounter tons of people on the trails. DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU! Even a busy day at Umstead is a day well spent!

“A Real Hike in a City!”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

We did not know about Umstead State Park for years. But when we needed to gear up for a major hike without traveling too far, we found this amazing trail located, unbelievably, between a major airport and a city. The 7.2 mile Sycamore Trail is our favorite, but shorter or longer loops are possible as well. A small elevation gain (700 ft.), some roots and rocks make it good practice for more challenging terrain.
The park has a good trail map, a visitor center, and many other amenities, and it's accessible from two major highways. What a treasure!.

“Raleigh is so lucky to have this gem!”
Reviewed June 15, 2013 via mobile

Bring your mountain bike or hiking boots and enjoy the wide groomed trails or head off on one of the more technical single tracks. Maps are posted throughout so you can figure out where you are. We spent a couple of hours and did 16 miles by bike, getting a good workout on the process. By the way, Google Maps Navigator does not show the southwest park entrance off I40 at Harrison Ave but only the north entrance off the 540 beltway.

“Hidden Beauty”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We were visiting Raleigh and had time to take a short trip. We saw the good recommendations on Trip Advisor and they were helpful. As soon as you pull into the park, you are in the middle of a beautiful forest. I recommend turning off the radio, rolling down the windows and listen to nature. Stop at the visitor, enjoy the education and grab a trail map. Their is a trail for everyone depending on you ability. We will visit again the next time we are in Raleigh.
