“Large Crowds Well Deserved”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

We drove to the restaurant on a Saturday around noon, and were surprised to find a large gathering of people lined up to be seated. We visited a nearby museum and returned at about 1:30 and were seated immediately. The southern bar-b-que was delicious and well worth the inconvenience. We were very glad we returned, and now understand why the crowds were so large. The menu is varied and the service was excellant. The restaurant is not overly impressive from the outside, but the experience was unusually pleasing.

“Good BBQ.”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Our table had BBQ, southern fried chicken and beef brisket. We all enjoyed our food. Reasonable prices. We had a pretty short wait. Would return.

“Upscale Q”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

The Pit in downtown Raleigh is nationally known for their upscale BBQ. The pitmaster has been featured on various travel and food programs and the restaurant is often a destination for business travelers and corporate types.During my visit I observed kitted out Homeland Security Police next to Chinese businessmen all enjoying the food.

That being said, the food is still pretty solid Carolina Q with generous servings at a reasonable price. In particular the starters of skillet cornbread and fried pimento cheese never fail to please. I often get the beef brisket and it's always cooked to perfection with that edge of smokey dark beef surrounding a melt in you mouth interior..YUM!

A chopped BBQ platter for lunch is going to fill you up and if you have room for dessert get the banana pudding which is hands down the best I've ever had!

“Southern staple.”
Reviewed October 25, 2012

BBQ is a southern staple and I think the pit does a great job presenting it in a classier way. The food is very good and so are the apple cider Martinis (my best friend who was visiting from the Midwest loved them on her trip).

“Saved by a cocktail!”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

Our trip to the Pit started out rocky, no one told us that we would be served by a team, and when the fourth or fifth person came to the table to take an order...well it was a little disconcerting. Ordered a cocktail that is house made and were told that they were "out of" an ingredient. Things were slapped down on the small table the two of us were sharing...bread, butter, two bottles of BBQ sauce when we hadn't even ordered drinks...it was getting crowded. When one of the "team" finally noticed we were a little upset, and explained what was going on, we explained that we were stuck between two large parties, couldn't get the drink one of us wanted, just weren't enjoying ourselves. Enter Erica...(probably a manager) who moved us to a larger more comfortable table, somehow came up with the mysterious ingredient for the cocktail, and was a magician at smoothing over hurt feelings and getting something done. Great recovery for customer service and we had a terrific evening after that! Their Brunswick Stew is different from any we have tasted, and much better as the ingredients could all be identified (chicken, lima beans, corn, tomatoes, potatoes..yum!). Ribs are great, so is chopped turkey. Fried Green Tomatoes are nicely fried with just a little breading, not so much the tomatoes are lost in it. The fried okra was obviously freshly cut with again just the right amount of breading. Desert was chocolate cake which we took back to the hotel. Only issue here is they didn't include the vanilla ice cream which would have been okay if we had been told they were omitting it...
Anyway, be sure you get reservations for The Pit as Saturday night is crowded and you don't want to have to wait for yummy BBQ in Raleigh!
