“Nice room & meeting facility”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Stayed here one night to attend a workshop, meeting and banquet for work. Room was very nice and clean. Meeting facilities were also nice. Requested a room NOT on the ground floor because of the outside entrances and was accommodated. Lots of outside noise in that area - right in the middle of N.C. State University campus. Warm cookie at check-in was a nice touch and very good too!

This is a nice hotel located in the middle of the NC State campus. The rooms are large and clean with flat screen TVs and an excellent work area. There are a good selection of electrical sockets except for the strange feature that on some, when you turn off the light the power to the socket goes out too. I learned that the hard why when I woke up with an uncharged cell phone. The bathrooms are large and well equipped with nice big fluffy towels. Apparently some rooms have mini fridges, mine did not but it had a coffee maker.

There is a breakfast buffet, restaurant, room service and cocktail lounge,. The food is typical hotel fare, not great but fully functional. There are some nice restaurants within a moderate walk or short drive. Parking is convenient and free.

There is a wide variety of quality of staff and, accordingly service in the hotel. The front desk staff (on a weekend) was not fully competent. They could not find my reservation (made on the Hilton website) until I gave them a confirmation number. Not a huge problem but annoying. The dining room staff ranged from outstandingly friendly to completely inattentive. But, again, no major problems.

The only deal breaker was being given a room on the first floor (room 103). It was wonderfully close to the back entrance to the parking lot but the main smoking area is located directly outside the room's window. There was a family reunion going on at the hotel on one of the nights I was there and the party went on until 2:30am with laughing and yelling right outside about ten feet from my window. On the following night it was still noisy until about midnight.

So, I recommend the hotel and even a first floor room. Just make sure it is an even number so it does not face the parking lot.

I've seen the Brownstone go through a few different identities, but Hilton has really done a nice job here with the Doubletree badge. Yes, the hotel has some age, but I wasn't offended by that at all. There are simply too many positives to this place to get caught up in the age of the hotel, especially since the renovation.

For starters, to the west, you can walk to NCSU's main campus and the main section of Hillsborough St's restaurants & pubs very quickly from this location. To the north, Cameron Village shopping center & restaurants are just a few blocks away through a tidy, older residential section. To the east within walking distance are the YMCA, St Mary's Episcopal School, IHOP, and more restaurants. We took advantage of this hotel's close proximity to the restaurants downtown. It is just a short drive to the thriving section of restaurants and bars on Glenwood Ave.

We also took advantage of the proximity to NCSU, where we went for a long run/walk through campus and the sidewalks on Hillsborough St.

Check-in was very friendly and prompt. As Hilton gold members, we were recognized and upgraded to a seventh floor king room, given passes to the YMCA and the free wifi password. We also were given water and soda's in our room for refreshment. Our room had a nice bed, a balcony, a new flat screen tv, and a decent sized bathroom. The room was clean and fresh, and so far, the hotel appears to be maintaining it's appearance on the interior fairly well.

Parking is also extremely easy and convenient. No parking decks here!

I really look forward to a return visit to the Brownstone!

Room Tip: Higher and away from the elevator is better here.

Pros.
We were happy with our roo, it was sparkling clean and we got to try memory foam beds which were quite comfortable. Nice fresh room decor, kind of urban hip, done up in neutrals, dark brown, maroon-red design carpet and 1950's inspired but hipper drapes. Lots of pillows and big, white fluffy towels. Enjoyed the framed architectural photographs of buildings. Comfy computer chair with adjustable back support. Nice toiletries in bathroom as well as a hairdryer. Great coffeemaker that made two cups at once and the coffee was Wolfgang Pucks and tasty.

Cons.
Ice machine on our third floor out of ice, had to go the 4th for our ice. No biggie. Got some noise from the parking lot from the overflow from the Sat. night dance party going on in the lobby level, but as most of the noise was laughter, it wasn't too bad, we got an okay night's sleep.

Being quite close to Glenwood meant we could partake of all the eateries. We had an enjoyable meal at the new Indian restaurant, the Blue Mango. Check out the cool bar there. Very colorful. Food was good, especially the ample mango house salad. Their garlic nan and the apricot chutney were delish. The other dishes we had were pretty okay, but not the best Indian food we've had. Kind of bland...could have been spicier. Next time we'll ask them to spice it up.

Breakfast at the hotel was kind of okay, and kind of not. My husband's veggie omelette was fine my Eggs Benedict ($10.99) had curdled, but edible Hollandaise Sauce. My hash browns were rubbery, not crisp. I was disappointed with my meal. The coffee was good and strong, and we got a full pot.. The waitstaff was very pleasant and attentive. So, a mixed bag.

So go for the location, the welcoming staff and the cool new decor, maybe take a miss on the restaurant--unless we just hit it on an off morning?

GallopingGringa, Glad you liked the "hip" room design. I really like the black and white architectural photos as well. We really think that the hotel has a perfect location for anyone visiting Raleigh. Next door to North Carolina State University, walking distances to Cameron Village shoppping center and all the restaurant and nightlife downtown has to offer. Thanks for the review.

The hotel was recently renovated. I found the room clean and comfortable, exactly what I was looking for. Others commented on water pressure; I had no problem with the water pressure per se, but the washer in the shower that directs the water from the tub to the shower needs to be replaced. Unlike other area hotels, parking and internet were free. Others commented about the branding; I don't care if they call this a "Doubletree" or a "Hilton Garden Inn"; I paid less then I typically do at a Garden Inn, and got a very satisfactory room. Staff was pleasant and helpful when I was there. It ain't the Ritz, but it is 1/4 the price. I found it comfortable to a 3 night stay, and would stay there again.

Things did not start well with a surly staff member checking us in a nd basically went downhill form there. We were there for a week and I wished we had moved hotels as it was one of the worst hotels I have stayed in for some time. The staff were rude apart from the charming Sharnee in the restaurant and Leticia in Housekeeping and completely uninterested in guests. Check out was worse than check in with an argument about receiving a receipt for the payment of the rooms as "it was paid for by a 3rd party and therefore will not be the same price!!!!". The woman had obviously never heard of the maxim that the customer is always right and it just capped off a very unpleasant stay. The room was not very pleasant, the pillows stunk, the wifi sucked and the most irritating thing was after travelling for a week previously we arrive don a Friday to be told that there was no laundry in the weekends. I have never heard of no laundry available in a hotel before - ever in any country I have visited! I was told that we would have to wait 2 days and even then it might not be possible. The food in the restaurant and room service was barely acceptable. The breakfast was pitiful and expensive for what it was and after day one we avoided the scrambled eggs as they had obviously been sitting there for a very long time. My recommendation is to avoid this place at all costs - I will be for sure as will all my colleagues.

Thank you for taking the time to share you review. Will most certainly pass along your positive comments to Sharnee and Leticia. Certainly regret that your overall experience was less than stellar. I will share your experience with our staff and look for opportunities for improvement. The laundry that we were using during your stay does not process laundry on weekends and as a result of you review we now have an alternative laundry

Warmest regards,

Overall I was disappointed with this hotel. Bathrooms have no counter space at all. Faucet in vanity had such a low flow rate that it took 15 seconds to fill a small glass of water. I tested it at home and it should take around 3 seconds so I wasn't just imagining this. Tankless toilet has a truck stop feel to it. Elevators need to be updated. Check in agent seemed like he couldn't care less that I was there. Not a terrible place, but no nicer than a new Fairfield or Springhill which would cost a decent amount less.

Beds were pretty good and a good location are about all I can say positive.
